Plea of support from Dance New Amsterdam

April 18, 2013

here is a plea from Dance New Amsterdam’s Martha Chapman. i’ve written & posted here about them before because i believe in them and the work and support they give to the dance community.

Hi Friends & Colleagues!
I am writing to you as a fellow-lover of arts and culture, here in New York City and everywhere! Thanks to good folks like all of you, the arts are appreciated, created, trained for, agonized about, and in general celebrated. Keep it up!

As many of you know, I teach and am on the Board at Dance New Amsterdam, where some of you know me and my classes. Our annual Spring Fundraising Drive is starting up – and I am asking if you would be willing to help us meet our funding goal of $100K this year! It’s ambitious, but we already have donors (including me) who’d pledged almost $30K, and the drive is yet to “officially” start. Let’s keep dancing!

If you can contribute yourself – great! Any and all donations are welcome – www.dnadance.org – click on “DONATE.” AND – there will be some special benefits like tickets to DNA shows for new donors once the funding drive kicks off this coming Thursday. If you’d like to receive this official eblast from DNA, send me a message and I’ll forward the eblast to you. You can sign up for eblasts yourself on the site too.

But…if times are tight and a donation is not possible for you at this time, woud you be willing to reach out to 3 of your connections, asking them to donate? “Crowd-sourcing” is a great way to introduce folks you know to a great place that makes dance and dancers.

AND – if any of you are in New York and can attend, I would love to invite you personally to a terrific event on Thursday, May 16th… DNA’s first annual “Spring Soiree,” to be held at Plein Sud – a swanky hotel down the street from our studios on Chambers St. Come raise a glass to dance and the arts… let me know and I’ll send your contact info to DNA’s offices asking them to send you an invite.

Thank for your attention and for being the fantastic, art-conscious and creative people that you are.

Blessings –
Martha Chapman

Trisha Brown @ BAM this week opening 1/30/13

January 30, 2013

trisha brown announced last december she is quiting dancing or actually making new dances but considering she’s created dances for 30 years that’s a pretty

good run i’d say. i was lucky to get tickets to see the company this wednesday, 1/30/13 not sure where the seats are but at least i won’t have to do any cues.

see BAM web site for more ticket information and a wonderful article in this past sunday Times by here at the Times lesure & arts sectio .

we last saw trisha’s work Astral Converted at the Park Ave Armory last fall. this was mary’s first introduction to the company and trisha’s work. we both enjoyed it and a question and answer session afterwards.

dance is such a lovely art form along with painting and sometimes photography. i think that photography is very hard for people to wrap their heads around as an art because we’ve all been so indatated with pictures, they are everywhere and of everything how can they be so special one asks.

yet how can we, each individual be unique when we are all made out of the same general material of DNA information and yet we humans are so different. trisha’s dances very physical and fluid yet playfully fun.

If one can get tickets I’d suggest taking a trip into Brooklyn and see what her work is all about. Be forewarned BAM has some off the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever come  across. sitting for more than two hours can be painful.

update on Dance New Amsterdam studio rally, what you can do

July 22, 2010

i’ve been corresponding with Martha Chapman about DNA loosing their current home and city hall demonstration in the rain.

lone dancer (c)2010, Eva Yaa Asantewaa

Dance joy (c)2010, Eva Yaa Asantewaa

it really would be a great losses to this fair city to loose a very nice performance and studio space in the city. i know DNA is furlonging their staff to keep expenses down so it’s hard to get more information about what’s actually going on there. but you could do dear reader is write and send an email to Hon Mayor Bloomberg expressing surport for DNA here and ask the mayor to help in this matter. write of call 311 ask for the mayors office and speak up for our arts and culture.

does the city really need this space and monies or does the city benefit more from having dancers dancing.

i’d hate to see groups of dancers hanging around on street corners dancing for spare change or food.

NY1 covered the rally and heres a link to NY1’s story because a picture tells a better story than i do. also New York Daily news covered the event see their link or one can go to DNA’s facebook page to keep up late developing news. better yet go directly to DNA’s web page for class information.

Keep dancers dancing (c)2010, Eva Yaa Asantewaa
