Trisha Brown @ BAM this week opening 1/30/13

January 30, 2013

trisha brown announced last december she is quiting dancing or actually making new dances but considering she’s created dances for 30 years that’s a pretty

good run i’d say. i was lucky to get tickets to see the company this wednesday, 1/30/13 not sure where the seats are but at least i won’t have to do any cues.

see BAM web site for more ticket information and a wonderful article in this past sunday Times by here at the Times lesure & arts sectio .

we last saw trisha’s work Astral Converted at the Park Ave Armory last fall. this was mary’s first introduction to the company and trisha’s work. we both enjoyed it and a question and answer session afterwards.

dance is such a lovely art form along with painting and sometimes photography. i think that photography is very hard for people to wrap their heads around as an art because we’ve all been so indatated with pictures, they are everywhere and of everything how can they be so special one asks.

yet how can we, each individual be unique when we are all made out of the same general material of DNA information and yet we humans are so different. trisha’s dances very physical and fluid yet playfully fun.

If one can get tickets I’d suggest taking a trip into Brooklyn and see what her work is all about. Be forewarned BAM has some off the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever come  across. sitting for more than two hours can be painful.

the case of the missing umbrella & jpmorgans convictions

June 26, 2012

today is my day for rest and relaxation  maybe catching up with my life, there is always a bill or two to be paid sitting here but sometimes the desk is clear, though my mind can still be cloudy. this past weekend i worked on our XR 7 convertible putting in 3 point seat belts for the rear seat. it took all weekend for me, a fellow with a little brain, to figure out. it wasn’t as easy as i though it would be as i had done front belts in two other cars this was different.  as my dancers friends say ‘there are only so many plies in the knees.’

i caught up on some errands yesterday which included going to the bank making a deposit where my umbrella was taken by an unknowned person, now this is New York City and wouldn’t you be surprised to learn there are crooks and thieves hiding out in our banks. just ask jamie diamond about how many convictions this bank has had under his leadership. oh the us senate banking committee  forgot to ask him but you can look it up here at jpmorgan watch. now the umbrella wasn’t in one of his branches  so he’s clear of that, but mr. diamond  must have a problem hiring competent people to work for him as they all keeping getting involved in these schemes.

but i find it hard to believe none of our senators nor representatives asked questions about his banks ethics. do you think they were all in his pocket? could that be true?

you’ve just got to keep your eyes open, yet bankers have a way with them, my bank Capital One keeps changing accounts from free to fee based after awhile, and now an orange umbrella or one of their customers has something they didn’t come in with, is that called a profit or theft?

today i ordered my winnings from the contest Color it Red from o’reilly press and tried to order tickets from BAMs but i am not a member so i’ll have to wait until all the members get their pick, oh ok. i”ve aways wanted to see Einstein on the Beach since working on the production at the Met opera house years ago. We’ll be in Alaska when tickets go on sale so i am hoping i can buy something nice on line. oh well

we now have iphones, which we got the other weekend from verizon who sells the iPhones but doesn’t service them nor troubleshoot them. in the box our iphones came in there is a pamphlet Finger tips a quick start into a new world for new eyes,, or old people who wear glasses. as mary says sometimes way too much information.

i am not doing very well communicating with model type people these days. it must be me it doesn’t seem possible that everyone else is off the wall, but it could be. a fashion stylist named bunny style was looking for togs who do motion fashion photography, what ever that is? she posted her farcebook page, have they changed your email address yet on farcebook showing her fashions. there didn’t look like anything showing motion and i asked her if she wasn’t thinking emotion. she deleted my message before answering it, oh well.

it’s getting to be nap time as i was woke up early this morning from the constructions workers underneath my bedroom window this knocking out spaces for new windows for the summers renovation. it’s a long haul because i only see a few people working on the site. are they out of money already? so much for them at this rate they’ll be working on this building a lifetime before finishing the project.

but i’ll finish up now, i’ll post more pictures of my projects as i get them.

PINA the movie in 3D by wim wenders at BAM

December 29, 2011

last night in the rain we drove out to brooklyn BAM to see PINA

the Wim Wenders 3D film on Pina Bausch work with Tanztheater Wuppertal. I’ve had the extreme pleasure of seeing the company perform at BAM during the Next Wave festival . My first ever experience seeing Pina’s work  was the Rite of Spring at BAM which blew me away.

Pina Bausch Krueger

at that time i was working with Ralph Holmes on Guiding Light for Procter & Gamble on CBS. Ralph lit Dance In America for PBS for years and was considered the preeminent  television dance Lighting Director. oh did i say we share an Emmy together. not to take anything away from Jennifer Tipton whom i also worked with, nor any of the other designers who worked on this series

I would tell him about the company, actually rave about the company and Next Wave to him. he would smile nod his head in acknowledgment of our shared love of dance and go about his work. he was a wonderful teacher and i sought his guidance, as we shared sets going from his studio to mine as to how he lit it to keep the show consistent.

but i digress from lasts night experience. I had apprehensions about seeing a 3D movie which i hadn’t seen since i was a kid remembering , PHANTOM IN THE RUE MORGUE  in 3D with heads flying, corpses falling in ones lap.but we were quite surprised at the intimacy the 3D achieved with  dance.

the movie starts i think with Rite of Spring after a few spoken words (see link for short opening sequence.) and it just doesn’t stop going from one piece to another interspaced between with dancer reminiscences of Pina, how she communicated with them.

what struck me was the phrase ‘when words end, DANCE’ or something like that. another piece in the film was Cafe Muller which again on seeing it at BAM left me speech less. so simple yet complex what did i think and i didn’t have a ready answer. dance theater that made you think. whoa nellie.

don’t know  if you can tell how much i love dance, as a child i would dance in front of our stand up radio in the living room when no one else was around and i loved the Fred Astair or Gene Kelly like ‘Singing In The Rain’ type movies it looked like so much fun. but i was buried in Schenectady with very little chance of breaking out, besides i was pretty young and wet behind the ears to wander world.

another Pina dance featured in the movie was Vollmond ( full Moon). Pina’s work is so sensual and the film captures that sensuality. the one disturbing aspect of the 3D technique is a slight loss of sharpness. after all you’re wearing these ill fitting glasses  and it distracts a bit from the total presentations but not enough to keep people out of the theater.

This movie is playing 4 times a day through Monday 1/2

and 3 times Tuesday 1/3 through Thursday 1/5 at the BAM Rose Cinema  $15 general admission but worth the price.
