Sex cells and here at Emmanuel Fremin gallery it’s on or off the walls

“Sex Cells” at Emmanuel Fremin Gallery
Curated by Asli Unal

The most universal subject of art through the ages, the human nude has been a vehicle for commercialization, a symbol of freedom, and a topic of heated debate. In “Sex Cells,” eig…ht contemporary photographers explore how we direct sex appeal, both consciously and unconsciously, as a means of empowerment and manipulation. From the provocative to the grotesque, the featured artists combine familiar props and subjects in an original manner as they tackle themes of seduction, bondage, religion and bestiality. A reception on Thursday night, June 28th, kicks off the month long exhibition at the Emmanuel Fremin Gallery.

Reka Nyari’s jarring compositions juxtapose lust and disgust by pairing a beautiful model with animal carcasses. Her stark compositions present the objectified body as a target for consumption and challenge the viewer’s ability to hold two opposing emotions simultaneously. Using herself as the model, Brooklyn artist Erica Simone poses nude in public while unabashedly going about her daily routines. Simone wittily challenges the nature of the nude in art, examining the line between the mundane and the sexualized. The context tells us to interpret her as the subject of the photographs rather than the object of a sexual fantasy.

“Sex Cells” is on display from June 28th-July 28th, 2012 at the Emmanuel Fremin Gallery, 547 West 27th Street, Suite 508, New York, NY 10001.
Vernissage: June 28th, 6-8 p.m.

old work revisited or catching up with sending photos

November 18, 2011

today i’ve a cold and still feeling lousy and my typing hasn’t improved either. but i am trying to catch up on work, yea i call this work some might think it’s fun sitting here in front of a computer screen where the day goes by so quickly. did i eat today, what time is it? opps

life could be worst as i am wondering what to do about all the spam comments i am getting here. i did like one from a learn at home belly dancing course. here are some quotes

1) Vary your speed – slow, medium, or fast
2) Vary the intensity of your energy – soft or hard
3) Vary the number of times you work each side of the body
4) Change the direction you are facing
5) Change your level by raising or lowering your body
6) Do your move standing pivoting, or traveling
7) Change the direction of your move

is it me or does this sound like SEX? speaking of sexy or nudes not sure they are all sexy especially after looking at model mayhem daily photo contest i’ve reworked some images to send to waiting models only today i converted them to B&W’s silly me.

female nude

but the model who i was sending the images is a male who was part of this session so i’ll try and concentrate on that task

couple

kneeling

i was trying to work with a theme here of non-communication using the black rubber gloves as a barrier to actual touching

indifference

 or this attitude

is something touching me

i think she was a good sport, although she was paid she really didn’t understand what i am looking for but gave what she could.

UGH

the male didn’t feel too comfortable here either or inexperienced. this was everybody’s first time working together maybe i should have been more active in my direction, oh well

remove shroud

overall i think i got some nice images although the female model didn’t want any of the images for her portfolio, can’t please everyone.

couple

well at least i can cross this off the list. the male model sent me an email looking for work for himself and another female in fine art or erotica. hum i wonder what people will think of this work’s category erotic/fine art? i’ve my own opinion but hey who am i?

if any readers are interested in working with me do get in contact with me through my web site. i only publish work here of paid models not some of my paid work which is private unless i am given permission.

Colleagues,

Please join us on Thursday June 23 as we introduce our latest enterprise, Winkel & Balktick Sell Out.

Mark Winkel & Kevin Balktick are a pair of Brooklyn-based event producers. They met in 2005 when they became neighbors in a live/work loft building in Dumbo, and began working together shortly thereafter.

We will explain our strategy for success, and provide information for those wishing to get in on the ground floor of this amazing opportunity.  Our big Initial Public Offering will be on Saturday, September 3rd in a vast warehouse.

We are in search of “creatives” (aka artists), interns (aka volunteers), coordinators, carpenters, audio / video / electrical / lighting techs, riggers, decorators, web designers/developers, caterers and more.  No matter what your skills or experience, there is a place for you at W&B Sell Out.

For those of you who have been through our business processes before, you can plug right in at wandbnyc.com/participate.

Sincerely,

Mark Winkel & Kevin Balktick

i just can’t stop myself creating this stuff, it just happens

May 31, 2011

and it doesn’t help that i find people to help me. last week i met admiral and interviewed her for an upcoming project of mine and we agreed to explore a session to see what happens, that’s one of the ways i work not really having a vision of where i’ll wind up at the end of the day, well since it’s art and most of art is a failure but it’s in the trying and failing that the real art is created. i am really not sure what’s going on here but we started doing some dance images and worked our way in or out, depending on ones outlook into some of the other images.

a simple dance image

with costume changes

nude dancer in dressing grown

i am using mixed lighting sources with strobes as the main light but adding some mr 16’s 50w units which add an awfully lot  of light, i threw some color on them just of fun.

nude female dancer in dressing grown

and another costume change, well since she’s almost nude to begin with it doesn’t take long to slip from one thing to another.

female nude

odd color on that mr 16 very green and it’s a 3200 kelvin color temp, don’t remember what color it was but if you’re interested i’ll try and look it up.

female nude

what i liked about admiral during our interview was her,’ yes lets try that.’  she saw a couple of my gold face female images and was really up for trying that.

christmas past

don’t you just love the color of her hair?

we have a friend and gallery owner who’s always said he is looking for ‘edgy’ work. define edgy was always our reaction, but what he means is work that’s a bit different but sells. i look at this session   and wonder what kind of person would want to look at this image everyday or this one?

bound female nude with gold face

now if you look closely, well you can because your eyes are open and not like the model whom i seem to have caught with her eyes closed all day. i remember shoot with a young japanese model doing some fashion, yea i know didn’t think i had it in me did you, neither did i, but she was always looking down. when i mentioned this to her she said,’ gee my teacher tells me the same thing.’ duh……….. but here it sort of works

this is all part of my non – communication series i am trying to find people to work on. interested ? contact me.

if you’re interested in working with me on any project of mine or have a suggestion of your own drop me a line as i am always interested in meeting interesting people

Smithsonian Censorship reactions

December 11, 2010

i am personally appalled at the Smithsonian secretary G. Wayne Clough’s censorship by pulling a running exhibit ‘Hide/ Seek’ by David Wojnarowicz from the National Portrait Gallery. it again makes me wonder what kind of country do i live in and do i want to continue living here?

there must be some nice island that isn’t going to be swamped in the near future by the rising  global oceans, someplace we can drive our XR 7 convertible around in peace and not worry about some narrow minded person being upset by our art work.

Yahoos artinfo has a nice piece on this as does the New York Times have two pieces one titled ‘As ants crawl over Crucifix,Dead artist is Assailed again.’ and ‘Sexuality in Modernism: the partial history’.

hey but i wanted to see the actual video that caused all this furor so i did an google search for ‘A Fire in my belly’ and of course a YouTube link came up which i clicked on that took me to a safety link that wanted me to sign in in order to view the piece, Huh. so i went back and clicked on Vimeo which brought me directly to Fire.

http://vimeo.com/17457052

after watching the video i don’t really see what this is all about. what are all these people trying to protect me from? a dead homosexual or the watching of an edited down version of the artist almost 21 minute video that was edited down to 4 minutes for the exhibit.

isn’t the Smithsonian a public funded organization? yes. then why does it react to just one or two complaints  no matter who they are from and not allowing the rest of us to be heard. talk about terrorism and the fear it creates in the community isn’t this the same thing?

i think all artist care about is to be able to create, although it’s nice to have the money to put food on the table, unless you’re dead, then you don’t need much. but hey who am i ?

just a photographer

study shows people ignore generic photos

November 19, 2010

Most people can agree that run-of-the-mill stock photos can be boring and not generate any communications nor add interest. a new study by Jakob Nielsen, a web consultant and author finds that not only do they not elicit a responce or add anything but people actually ignore them. with eye-tracking software researchers can see where people are looking or not looking.

2011 Charlatan Ink Art Prize

November 17, 2010

The Charlatan Ink Art Project

was established in 2009 within the walls of the iconic Carlton Arms Hotel, New York, by two visual artists, Dariusz Solarski from Poland and Austrian born Andre van der Kerkhoff. From the moment of its conception, the Charlatan Ink Art Project has grown from a whimsical idea into an ever expanding universe of ideas, which will touch over time all aspects of the visual arts in whatever form or shape.

Within those expanding ideas the Charlatan Ink Art Project contains the essential nucleus of its creation, the establishment of the CHARLATAN INK ART PRIZE for the VISUAL ARTS. Which is part of the CHARLATAN INK COLLECTIVE.

The CHARLATAN INK ART PRIZE for the VISUAL ARTS will be the gateway for the Charlatan Ink Art Project to connect worldwide with artists, galleries and art organizations, facilitating cross pollination and creation of fertile soils to establish new and exciting means to present art to a wider public.

Once the Charlatan Ink Art Project has established itself within the New York art establishment and with time on a global stage, Charlatan Ink LLC New York will pledge itself to metamorphose into an art-entity, that will not only search for new inventive art and art practitioners, but will commit itself to nurture new talents through its facilities of publishing and art management. Charlatan Ink LLC New York will create an innovative new model in artist representation, allowing artists to be free of commercial conformity and limiting art market policies.

From a temporary, publicly accessible office, TWO’s administrators will hire employees and during the Dumbo Arts Festival will exhibit work and distribute Depression-era wages at a Payday Party. You are invited to submit an application online, choosing from one of the following assignments:

Catalog existing WPA structures in New York
Make a mixed CD related to…
Give a concert for your houseplant
Start an American tradition that you’d like to be preserved

A TWO administrator will contact and interview applications of interest. Applications are evaluated based on the strength and clarity of your proposed response to one of our assignments. Once hired, you will have a week to complete your assignment, for which you will be paid $23.50, the weekly wage for an artist in the Federal One Project (the arts division of the WPA). You must be able to complete your assignment during the work week of September 13th–20th.
TWO will hold a Payday Party at the office during the Dumbo Arts Festival on Saturday, September 25th. Employees will collect their wages and the public will be invited to view the week’s works and learn about the project. Completed assignments will also be on view during the entire Dumbo Arts Festival from

one of the descriptions of this performance is if

‘Butoh & Burlesque had a baby.’

This is my first time working with this group as our other section was posted earlier on fuzzypictures .  I had no say in the lighting of these pictures as the space has a stage manager / lighting designer who did the lighting. I felt lucky to get what I did out of this session.
