this has been a busy week for us getting out of the house of memories, i guess soon we’ll stop looking down for shadow whom we called ‘fur trap’, as she would be waiting outside any closed-door for us to reappear. she would stick her nose in the opening and sniff to check if we were in there. it will take some time for us to adjust to being a single couple.
of course what we are doing could be done with shadow here, going to movies, gallery openings, plays and dinners. to say nothing of making travel plans which we haven’t really begun, panama is weighing heavily on me getting back to my book project and mary is going off to europe in april. but we haven’t made any travel plans yet other than getting the xr 7 on the road and driving cross-country.

it’s so nice to have someone in my life who just by being there adds another dimension, making my life so much fuller. a positive force to negate my negative vibes.
so catching up with our social life we saw ‘Black Swan‘ the only current movie up for an academy award. friends have said it was so cool but i like my dance films closer to reality. maybe its a reflection of the times that things need to be blown up larger than life, needing more twist and turns,complications in order to hold this gen x generation’s attention.
i wasn’t thrilled with the movie, while i did connect with parts of the characters it never connected with the whole. reading Alstair Macauly ‘many faces of Black Swan deconstructed‘ in the NYTimes article on the movie didn’t help me any.
but hey i’ve aways thought Robert Altman’s movie Company the best dance company movie i’ve even seen, yes i know the hooky dance performance in thunder & lighting was a bit over the top but lovely anyways. A scene of a Lar Lubovitch pas de deux “My Funny Valentine” in a thunderstorm is no doubt meant to evoke deep, elegiac emotion with sturm-und-drang. The dancers forge on as rain and storm-detritus blow onto the stage. says dance magazine review. but whats a movie without some drama?
then we move on to an actual live dance performance at city center february 16 thru 20 called Flamingo Hoy which i urge you to see. now if i actually understood the moves and language of this dance form i might have gotten more than an evening’s entertainment but it’s director Carlos Saura, one of Spain’s most prominent filmmakers who made one of my favorite dance movies Carmen see the utube excerpt or NYTimes review. maybe i really need to learn spanish. but having toured in the 70’s with maria alba dance company, i did learn something about the passion involved in the art form of flamingo.
Maria’s name is remembered with reverence here in new york. i remember talking to one of the flamingo dancers at ‘N’ a small tapas bar down in soho where on wednesday night you can catch a wonderful show in their small space, a real intimate experience. come on down and enjoy the show sit at the bar or one of the tables and watch the performance.

last night we when down to a Adorama’s presentation by flash guru Joe McNally before heading out to dinner at Wallse located on the past site of Mother Courage, the first feminist restaurant in new york. i had a friend who managed the place who loved my son, when ever she saw him coming home from school she would give him a big hug. old neighborhood full of memories. after all it was my birthday and i decided to go to Joe’s presentation maybe even learn something while trying something new to eat.
yes we did learn something, buy more equipment, get three assistants, and buy more equipment. well we do have each other, a big help on our shoots, if we could only get the right numbers to appear on our lottery tickets we could get more equipment. there’s an idea for another Adorama workshop ” how to pick a winning lottery number for fun and profit.” are you listening helen?
tonight we are in for a sensual experience going to Knickerbocker bar & grill for dinner and jazz, my all time favorite steak house. one never knows how long we ‘ll walk on this earth, nor be buried underneath it, and to give up a lovely experience shared with someone who loves you seems to be a shame. there may never come tomorrow so why wait? biting down on their steak is almost as good as biting on mary’s ………………………opps.
but i’ve got to get back to work, what is writing this? yes it to is a lot of work for me to communicate with people by writing actual words on almost paper is something that’s taken me awhile to feel comfortable with. that’s where journaling has helped. so here are some non edited images from the other day.

HOW IT WORKS
There are six meeting points this year. Take your pick.
Astoria: Meet at Hoyt Playground – Google Map
Brooklyn: Meet by the Old Stone House – Google Map
Downtown Manhattan: Meet at Foley Square – Google Map
Queens: Meet at the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Park – Google Map
Uptown Manhattan: Meet at the Great Hill in Central Park – Google Map
Williamsburg / Bushwick: Meet at Bushwick Park (AKA Maria Hernandez Park) – Google Map
Everyone should meet at their chosen meeting point at 3 PM. Please be on time. Feel free to be early.
At the meeting points, participants will be organized into groups and assigned a specific train car. Once everyone is divided up we will all head to nearby subway station[s]. Do not talk to others once you enter the subway system. No one knows each other.
Sit in the car as you normally would. Read a magazine or whatever you would normally do. Your team leader will have already divided you into smaller groups, assigning your group a specific stop where you will depants.
As soon as the doors shut at the stop before yours, stand up and take your pants off and put them in your backpack. If you’d like to use a briefcase, purse, grocery bag, or whatever instead of a backpack that’s fine too. If anyone asks you why you’ve removed your pants, tell them that they were “getting uncomfortable” (or something along those lines.)
Exit the train at your assigned stop and stand on the platform, pantless. You will wait on the platform for the next train to arrive. Stay in the exact same place on the platform so you enter the next train in the same car as you exited the last train.
When you enter, act as you normally would. You do not know any of the other pantless riders. If questioned, tell folks that you “forgot to wear pants” and yes you are “a little cold.” Insist that it is a coincidence that others also forgot their pants. Be nice and friendly and normal.
All train routes will converge on Union Square. Your exact route will be explained at the meeting point, and may involve a transfer.
You can wear fun underwear if you like, but nothing that screams out, “I wore this because I’m doing a silly stunt.” Wear two pairs of underwear if it makes you feel more comfortable. Don’t wear a thong or anything else that might offend people. Our aim is to make people laugh, not piss them off.

Please leave your cameras at home and resist the temptation to snap photos with your iPhone, etc. while the event is happening. Take as many as you like before and after the event, but during the ride we really want people to enjoy the experience of participating rather than documenting. It detracts from the mission if everyone is taking photos of each other rather than keeping a straight face. Don’t worry, we have photographers assigned to every meeting point who will take great photos.
This is always a blast, and we look forward to seeing you there. You may bring along friends if you like, but make sure they get a chance to read all of these instructions.

EMERGING ARTISTS and EMERGING CURATORS

Proposals are accepted annually from Emerging Artists and Emerging Curators for Smack Mellon’s Summer Show. The selected Emerging Curator will review submissions from the Emerging Artists. The Curator will be expected to select half of the exhibiting artists from these submissions.
The exhibition will be presented June 18 – July 31, 2011.
An Emerging Artist is considered to be an artist without commercial representation who shows significant potential; has some evidence of professional achievement but not a substantial record of accomplishment; and is recognized as emerging by other artists, curators, producers, critics, and arts administrators.
An Emerging Curator is defined as an independent curator who is beginning his or her career as a curator. Emerging Curator proposals must show history of at least 3 examples of prior curatorial projects successfully presented to a public audience.

the beginning of september i had an opportunity to attend the Canon Expo here at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center held once every five years, guess i am lucky. i’ve ment to post this sooner but the trip to panama came up so quickly i had no time, now the hard part is getting the money for expenses promised.
i must say Canon Expo is quite an event from the opening impression on. it’s nice to see a show hiring a lighting designer to do the lighting and i wonder who the team of set and lighting designers were. the unsung team

the whole expo had some pretty cool lighting, trusses with theatrical lighting everywhere and miles of black velour blocking the daylight making the Javits Center one big black box

Canons whole line of products were displayed from medical imaging. no these guys were actual doctors and not actors playing a part. i had an interesting conversation with one fellow about amounts of radiation given off by one xray machine. they have lowered the amount of radiation a great deal from past machines and are continuing to make advances. i asked about software limiting the maximum amounts a machine could operate under thinking about the UCLA scandal were they were unknowingly administering lethal doses with their machines and didn’t pay attention to their patients complaints.

for those people who’ve kept up with my eclectic postings know this i some of my all time fav films. it’s a long one for sure 16 hours. i first saw it on PBS when they were a public educational television station, now they are just a tape playing house showing safe nature films and raising money to line the executives pockets. i’ve been there done that. has anyone who’s seen the replacement of Bill Moyers and Now know
On March 17, 2007, KW Institute for Contemporary Art will open Fassbinder: Berlin Alexanderplatz – An Exhibition. The show will present this unusual and fascinating work in a way that enables visitors to choose their own mode of approach. In fourteen separate rooms, the episodes and the epilogue of Berlin Alexanderplatz will be screened in permanent loop. In addition, all the episodes will be shown in chronological order and full length on a central big screen. Visitors can thus decide how they approach Berlin Alexanderplatz: they can divide its unusual length up into pieces, watch episodes several times, or return to the exhibition whenever they like, as the entrance ticket entitles holders to repeated visits. The parallel screening of all the episodes in one place will highlight Fassbinder’s impressive visual idiom and his artistically challenging, free and innovative use of images.
The epilogue to Berlin Alexanderplatz marks a high point in Fassbinder’s creative work, combining visual and narrative planes in a complex collage that anticipates contemporary artistic positions. The exhibition also presents stills from the film’s 224 scenes. Moreover sketches from Fassbinders storyboard will be on view for the first time ever. A further, highly personal document are the tapes on which Fassbinder himself recorded his script for the film and which have never previously been made accessible to the public.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue (in German; approx. 600 pages), edited by Klaus Biesenbach, with essays by Susan Sontag and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The catalogue includes extensive illustrations. Furthermore the publication contains the complete screenplay as well as the biography, blbliography and filmography. Curator: Klaus Biesenbach.
KW Institute for Contemporary Art is regularly listed among Germany’s foremost modern art institutions and attracts international media coverage. KW has no collection of its own but instead views itself as a laboratory for communicating and advancing contemporary cultural developments in Germany and abroad by means of exhibitions, workshops and resident artists’ studios, as well as by collaborating with artists or other institutions and by commissioning works.
Founded in the early 1990s by Klaus Biesenbach and a group of young art enthusiasts, the institution is located on the site of a abandoned margarine factory in Berlin’s Mitte district. It symbolizes, perhaps more than any other institution, the city’s development into a center of contemporary art in the decade after the fall of the Wall. As well as presenting the first solo shows or major new projects of outstanding international artists such as Doug Aitken, Dinos & Jake Chapman, Paul Pfeiffer, Santiago Sierra and Jane & Louise Wilson, KW also introduced emerging new artists from Berlin and elsewhere in Germany to a wider public.

The festival panel will make a final selection of works after the entry deadline. If your work is selected, you will be notified by e-mail by August 30, 2010. The screening copy of your work as a .mov file (in a DataDVD) or in miniDV format will need to be delivered to the festival office no later than September 10, 2010 . Entrants are responsible for shipping costs. Please do not use fiber envelopes.
There is no entry fee. Submission deadline: August 21, 2010.
