recent work, nude couple

well i’ve begun a new project which really is an outgrowth on my old theme of non-communication. the shoot went off well, except the models were late and had i been paying for the space i’d be upset but i wasn’t. a friend of mine let me use his space and a couple of strobes.

i decided to use a black background because it seemed easier but in looking at what i got in camera it was devoid of any place or time. i was working with two new people the male i’d met months ago but had only emailed the female and looked at her MM portfolio #119873. 

i had discussed the concept with both of them before hand so as not to have any issues arise which didn’t happen. of course there are limits on what is allowable especially when a stranger is touching you. we all have these and professional models have a public image to protect.

so as is my habit of not looking at images right after i shoot them i waited a couple of days and made my primary picks which mary also added a couple of images but looking at them in bridge i wasn’t too excited. during the shoot the models needed more direction than my dancer dance images, which was a challenge for both of us. mary’s suggestion to use actors instead of models seems like a good idea.

it seemed the male was afraid to get close to valentine keeping a safe distance. i had to keep moving him closer to her. she didn’t really project the dominant cat like qualities i was looking for. of course my direction was also missing which i need to improve on.

so i reverted to one of my old tricks of covering one or the other with cloth, in a way i am tired of that but it works. using the  black gloves as props are clumsy for sure but i though they would convey the message of not being able to feel a touch wearing them. not that he didn’t caress her boobs sometimes nor did she complain the movements seemed awkward.

the backgrounds i put in later because here they were hanging in this blackness like human blobs. thank goodness for all my photoshop training, oh and having all these different generic backgrounds.

we worked for a couple hours alternating between them as a couple and some single session. i got better shots of her when we did our one on one stuff.  i had brought along a couple of props, the pearls and a black mask as well as the cloth.

this is the final one from this series that i’ve worked on and of course i save the best until last.

so the search goes to find the perfect models/actors who are able to express my ideas and my training in learning how to convey my ideas so they can express them. if anyone reading this blog would like to work with me and are in the new york area or planning to visit drop me a line. i am open to new ideas and concepts.

Building 110: LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island, and rehearsal space at The Vaults at 14 Wall Street.

Residency Dates + Locations

LMCC is currently accepting applications for Swing Space placement during 2012.

Visual Arts – Studio Space at Building 110: Residencies will take place in two five-month sessions between March – July 2012 and August – December 2012.

Performing Arts – Rehearsal Space in the Vaults: Residencies will take place in one of four staggered, overlapping six-month sessions between January – June 2012, March – August 2012, May – October 2012, and July – December 2012.

About Swing Space

Swing Space is a project-based residency program that places visual and performing artists and arts groups in space for the development and presentation of new projects. Since its launch in 2005, Swing Space has placed over a thousand artists in more than 20 different locations throughout Lower Manhattan and on Governors Island all generously provided by the Downtown real estate community and LMCC’s programming partners. Swing Space is designed to address short-term space needs for a wide range of projects, and to encourage creative, experimental and collaborative approaches to artistic practice in unconventional spaces. i just can’t stop myself creating this stuff, it just happens

and it doesn’t help that i find people to help me. last week i met admiral and interviewed her for an upcoming project of mine and we agreed to explore a session to see what happens, that’s one of the ways i work not really having a vision of where i’ll wind up at the end of the day, well since it’s art and most of art is a failure but it’s in the trying and failing that the real art is created. i am really not sure what’s going on here but we started doing some dance images and worked our way in or out, depending on ones outlook into some of the other images.

i am using mixed lighting sources with strobes as the main light but adding some mr 16’s 50w units which add an awfully lot  of light, i threw some color on them just of fun.

and another costume change, well since she’s almost nude to begin with it doesn’t take long to slip from one thing to another.

odd color on that mr 16 very green and it’s a 3200 kelvin color temp, don’t remember what color it was but if you’re interested i’ll try and look it up.

what i liked about admiral during our interview was her,’ yes lets try that.’  she saw a couple of my gold face female images and was really up for trying that.

we have a friend and gallery owner who’s always said he is looking for ‘edgy’ work. define edgy was always our reaction, but what he means is work that’s a bit different but sells. i look at this session   and wonder what kind of person would want to look at this image everyday or this one?

now if you look closely, well you can because your eyes are open and not like the model whom i seem to have caught with her eyes closed all day. i remember shoot with a young japanese model doing some fashion, yea i know didn’t think i had it in me did you, neither did i, but she was always looking down. when i mentioned this to her she said,’ gee my teacher tells me the same thing.’ duh……….. but here it sort of works

visiting Sarah Small’s ‘Tableau Vivant’ of the delirium constructions

monday night, may 23, i had the opportunity to volunteer on sarah’s new show out at Skylight One at the Williamsburg bank building in Brooklyn on her new production. sarah’s productions are  growing larger each time she does one. the last time she did one of these it was in powerhouse books in DUMBO. now she’s into a much larger venue with a larger cast and impressive performance.

i’ve know of her work for some time and have contacted her before about working on any upcoming project together, which never came about as she has her vision and i’ve mine. see her work at http://livingpictureprojects.com/ and mine at www.jeneyoutt.com we’re much different but we both work with nude & clothed bodies so we’ve a similar premise.

as her web site says “for the first time, this May, Small will be exploring, within the Tableau Vivant, a specific social phenomenon: the ritual of marriage. With its airs of pageantry and religious rectitude, wedding ceremonies celebrate the most intimate joining of two individuals in the most public manner, providing rich fodder for examination within the project’s framework. While the process is still developing, Small will act as the legal officiant for two couples as she simultaneously directs the attendant Tableau Vivant cast in their own explorations of the theme, mingling performance art with reality in a compelling cocktail.”

my work is more about how we hide what we reveal but covering ourselves up. i am also interested in a personal quest of self discovery which i began years ago having what would be categorized as a religious experience but at the time i had no idea what had happened during a aikido meditative moment. it’s been a long journey with many delightful discoveries, but as the saying goes, self discovery isn’t always good news.

well that’s the big Tableau picture and there were many photographers wandering around cameras clicking and zooming shooting videos and pictures, what i usually do is to take in the whole scene then see what interests me. after all this isn’t a commercial job or wedding more like fun, that’s it FUN that’s why i do photography for the fun of creating it. i’ve worked since i was 14 years old now it’s time to have more fun in life.

she is shooting with a canon camera through a L series lens which i also own. so what could i add to this scene? here we are in a beautiful classic bank building………….. look around you what do you see?

this reminds me of the Byzantine Cathedral in St Marks Square in Venice Italy, talk about cool. i can imagine the immigrant family walking into this bank depositing their hard earned pennies and being impressed, who wouldn’t? where is the america and americans who built buildings like these. now banks are just plain hollow walls with automatic tellers and cameras. empty spaces to be filled with the next dry cleaner tenant, what have we wrought on ourselves america?

so you can see i was pretty busy during rehearsals discovering things, someone had draped the front doors to prevent people from couldn’t seeing the naked people inside who were there to be seen as part of this evening performance, yea i know. but this was exactly my kind of picture.

now i figured everything was covered and i might as well find something constructive to do to help out and earn my keep. i found two young ladies stuffing programs and helped them fold & assemble the programs, then i helped bring ice in for the bar and generally hung around being helpful. but here is what you’ve all waited so patiently for. i retired to the balcony over the front entrance for my view of the beginning

i really just watched and listened, after all if my eyes are looking through a view finder they really aren’t seeing and experiencing the whole performance. i loved the music by meredith monk and the voices of the awakened tableau. yes i tried out the video portion of my camera and found other limitations of it. one can’t pan, zoom & focus at the same time without growing another hand. but who needs sharp images when making a video?

One of our most unique programs, we invite proposal submissions from artists who wish to work in one of our window the spaces for free. Selected participants are given marketing, technical and administrative support, and may also receive a small stipend. chashama also provides an opportunity to rent a Windows space at subsidized weekly and monthly rates. Either way you approach it, each Windows installation proves to be a vital component of every artist’s creative process, providing a unique platform for presentation and displaying their work to new audiences.

Our street-level windows are located in some of NYC’s most highly visible locations and their accessibility, and the various projects displayed within, reach a countless number of passers-by, often fascinating many who linger and sometimes participate in the unusual presentations.

This has been a grievous season for the tight-knit tribe of combat photographers. For The Times, the sorrow began last October, when a land mine exploded under Joao Silva while he was shooting pictures of an American patrol near Kandahar, Afghanistan, destroying both of his legs and shredding his intestinal tract. This spring, three other photographers working for The Times — Jehad Nga, Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario — were among the numerous journalists who disappeared into the custody of Libyan state thugs, where they were beaten and terrorized before we could negotiate their release. The darkness deepened by several hues last month when two admired lensmen — Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros — were killed while embedded with Libya’s hapless rebel militia.

Adorama is offering a ground-floor opportunity for a talented, enthusiastic, web-savvy writer who is familiar with photographic equipent to contribute to the production of the Adorama Learning Center, groundbreaking online photo magazine and resource.

Initial responsibilities will focus on going through our existing inventory of hundreds of photography-related articles and product reviews, and adding important new information to the related database for each article, using our online, browser-based administration system.

Upon completion of this project, ongoing responsibilities will include maintaining and updating product buying guides, preparing images related to articles for web use, and adding relevant links and tags to new articles during the production process. You may also be called upon to write product reviews or photography how-to articles.

The ideal candidate should be:

  • Knowledgeable about DSLRs, lenses, flash, tripods and other photographic equipment
  • Able to work on web-based administrative tools
  • Very detail-oriented and have consistent follow-through on all projects
  • Have full-time access to a computer and high-speed Internet
  • Familiar with (and have access to) Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements for basic image editing (resizing and, color correction)

Links to relevant blog posts would be helpful; candidates should be  prepared to take a brief test to demonstrate photographic knowledge. Work references may be requested.

This is a full-time freelance assignment with the possiblity/opportunity for long-term, permanent employment. Pay will be based on experience.

Musecube lost souls, catching up

on friends and acquaintances on the once lovely photographic community. i left their server years ago at the beginning of the decline of their golden years. but some mary included stayed but i think she has moved all of her stuff off and on to photoshelter.

i really liked the layout templates very professional looking and not being able to drag images off on to desktop what i didn’t like was the have the google search rating come up on the 8th page. seems like a metta data error not fitting into google analytics which google changes every once in a while and has just done so. i’d contacted Geoffrey Vail Brown the owner of the site many times about this getting nowhere. so i left to go to Photoshelter.

the wonderful thing about musecube  was the community of photographers who made up the site. at times it did seem to be a mutual admiration society which i was involved in. when i first started posting pictures i was just really learning and by looking at some of the other togs work blew me away.

there was jack cutler who is such a fine gentleman, don’t let that get around and ruin his reputation, we see him almost every year at photoexpo i learned so much from him. also michael aspire whos work covered many a MET magazine cover, another one we get to see every once in a while. edward lampe visited from amsterdam and i took him around to some of the not so touristy views of the city.

last week peter le grand came in from chicago and we had a lovely lunch with him. others who have visited us have been the model red celt who stayed with us for a week or so. just today oleanna potter contacted me on facebook, a site i don’t much go on, talking about her husbands frederick site. one time melissa had a picture showing on Kodak’s times square billboard and i went down and shot it for her .

we’ve made a lot of friends on that site just doing our show and tell on their criquite pages. there still is a long list of people we’d love to meet and maybe someday we will. there is vincent rijs in amsterdam, iowa pech in germany, christopher hart in texas, and maybe as we are passing through ohio we cans say hello to michael mc gowan.

i best be getting back to my chores at hand but i am tired, tired of contacting people and getting nowhere but maybe that’s somewhere and i just don’t know where it is. oh well

yesterday i edited my first birthday video shoot, not my birthday someone else’s, pretty simple if a 10 year old kid can do it i thought i might have a chance. i am here to say i am moving on to 11.

Acts of Lights, on dancing with Martha Graham

another review of a photographic book i bought when we saw the Graham company in their last New York season this past year. Acts of light, Martha Graham in the 21st Century shows a completely different side to Martha’s work. the photography is excellent done by John Deane and text by Nan Deane Cano. I do recommend this book to anyone who loves dance. it’s a worthy one to have laying around on your coffee table, actually both books are wonderful.

what separates this book from Barbara Morgans lovely B&W book on almost the same subject is color for obvious but the sharing from the dancers point of character. what they are thinking about the different roles they are asked to perform some directly from Martha herself and some maybe from other dancers. this is what i loved about the book, it gave me another dimension  on Martha’s work.

what is so exciting to me about this book are the pictures of dancers i knew or have worked on their creations. Valerie Bettis, Anna Sokolow, Jose Limon then Merc Cunningham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman and Martha Graham herself but also included are pictures of Dr. Daietz Teitaro Suzuki along with other personal work.

now my images of Martha were more like the cover on Barbara’s  book but what i see in Acts of Light are costumes much different than the fully covered  ones in Morgan’s book. while there is nothing outrageous in either book, also no nude female forms while the men have much less clothing on. i’ve often wondered how female dancers have seen themselves over the years even now.

i love the well toned human form  but cringe looking at how my body has develpoed a mind of it’s own these days. who is that person looking back from the mirror at me. but then again i don’t spend hours in dance class nor wrestling with a bare, more like a bag of potato chips.

The controversial photograph “Piss Christ” by Andres Serrano, which shows a small crucifix submerged in a jar of the artist’s urine, has been (pardon the pun) pissing people off since 1987 when US Senator Jesse Helms first denounced it as sacrilegious. Over the weekend, it was destroyed by Christian protesters while being displayed in a French gallery.

It had been the subject of weeks of protests from Catholic groups in France which led to the photograph being placed behind plexiglass. Two guards were posted to protect the work but apparently that wasn’t enough. The Guardian reports:

Just after 11am on Sunday, four people in sunglasses entered the gallery where the exhibition was being held. One took a hammer from his sock and threatened security staff. A guard restrained one man but the remaining members of the group managed to smash an acrylic screen and slash the photograph with what police believe was a screwdriver or ice pick. They then destroyed another photograph, of nuns’ hands in prayer.Piss Christ is part of a series by Serrano showing religious objects submerged in fluid such as blood and milk. It was being shown in an exhibition to mark 10 years of the art dealer Yvon Lambert’s personal collection in his 18th-century mansion.

Last week the gallery complained of “extremist harassment” by Christians who wanted the image banned. The archbishop of Vaucluse, Jean-Pierre Cattenoz, called the work “odious” and said he wanted “this trash” taken off the gallery walls.

Previously “Piss Christ” has been vandalized both in Australia and a Serrano show in Sweden was “ransacked” by Neo-Nazis in 2007.

The culture minister, Frédéric Mitterrand, condemned the vandalism as an attack on the fundamental freedoms of creation and expression. A police complaint has been filed by the gallery and the guards.The gallery’s director, Eric Mézil, says he will keep the exhibition open to the public with the destroyed work on show “so people can see what barbarians can do”.

whether one likes the art or artist, why do people raise their hands to destroy others work? no one compels them to look at art it’s a voluntary act. who gives us the right to judge others least we not judge ourselves first? it seems an ungodly thing to take away other peoples right to create.
