Phantom of the Opera 23 years on Broadway and still going strong.

January 29, 2011

For my Christmas present mary bought two tickets to see Keith Jarrett because I said I liked his music. Well we went and saw it at Carnegie Hall, the review I posted a couple of weeks ago.

Being New Yorkers we sometimes take the culture events we have before us for granted as I also do even though I worked in the theaters for about 40 years. Certain shows I’ve seen but I never got around to see Phantom of the Opera. Maybe knowing it was a love story made it hard to imagine going to see with someone who I wasn’t romantically involved with.

Now i am romantically involved so it’s time. I called a friend of mine who I knew worked on the show to ask how the cast was, sometimes the quality slips on some shows after awhile. But jack said they were ‘excellent’ so I asked if he could get me tickets. ‘Sure just give me the date.’

I picked the evening performance of January 26, 2011. Little did I know another northeaster snowstorm was on its way? We’ve been hit with way too many of them this year and this one was the worst so far. After listening to the weather reports reporting how bad the storm was predicted to be we decided to bring Shadow into my city apartment in case we got stuck and couldn’t get back out to the house.

We drove in early that evening put the car in a garage and I cooked dinner for us, then dressed and off we went into a nice calm evening. We walked down to the Majestic Theater fairly easy; the city wasn’t too messy considering all the snow we’ve had. Found our seats in the orchestra row L 104, 105 right in the center of the house and settled in. Mary & I were excited and I always do enjoy the theater.

The show was wonderful, even though I am not a big fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber music, theme and repetition. But I’ve got to admit ‘The Music of the Night’ is a pretty catchy and powerful theme. The singers were all wonderful.

During intermission mary and I talked about bringing the grandchildren up to Kids Night on Broadway and what show they might enjoy. It’s a buy a ticket for the Kid and the adult gets in free. February 6- 10, 2011. See www.nycgo.com for more information

The scenic design of Phantom is another thing in itself. Just magical what with all the fog effects simple backdrops lit well, Pity this art of scenic painting backdrops is becoming or has become a lost art. Shows don’t need massive scenery and effects to work. Nobody leaves the theater whistling scenery nor humming effects. Oh did i say candles everywhere.

Phantom works or else it wouldn’t have lasted this long and bought so much joy to so many people. Yes I had a tear in the last scene when Christina kisses the Phantom and goes off with Rahoul. It’s sad when love cannot be consummated and some people are left behind alone. But here in the theater we don’t need to have the Disney ending. They don’t catch the Phantom and burn him to the stake there is only…….. well i won’t say in case you want to see the show. But for me a happy ending all the same, tear and all.

It was during curtain calls that we learned that January 25, 201 was the 23rd year anniversary performance of the show and Hal Prince was sitting in the audience, cue spotlight to pick him up. I didn’t see him as everyone around us was standing up and mary can’t see over the people anyways but she thought he had a green hat on.

When we got to the lobby the snow was coming down at an 45 degree angle driven so hard it hurt ones face. Silly us we walked home and mary went and got the car and we  all piled in heading across the river. We didn’t want to get stuck here in the city but it was a treacherous white knuckle ride home at 5 to 20 mph up the snow covered west side highway which hadn’t been plowed. We almost got stuck on the on ramp to the George Washington Bridge but mary rocked us out of it. Scary few moments.

When we got home the plows had been by and the driveway was blocked which mary had to shovel out while I pushed the snow blower around the driveway so we could drive up.

I guess it was about 4-6 inches of snow by then. Shadow stayed in the nice warn car with the flashers on. We all piled into the house around two am. Getting home took longer and was scarier than the show but all in all it was a lovely evening.

Dance New Amsterdam art exhibit, ‘Figure in Motion’

December 3, 2010

if you remember i’ve written about DNA before when they were being threatened with a rent increase that would drive them from their downtown location. well negotiations are continuing so when and where DNA will be is still up in the air. Maybe writing to Mayor Bloomberg asking to preserve this dance institution might help, it couldn’t hurt, and might  be the right thing to do.

i always feel a kinship with dancers knowing how hard their lives are in creating such an ephemeral art form as dance.being a member of a dance company in the 70’s i saw how hard they worked. believe me it’s not an easy life but young people are drawn to it everyday? one wonders why?

why does any artist create? a question i ask myself every once in a while. i’ve yet to come up with a definitive answer except to say it feels right and makes me sleep better.

dance seems to be in the air this week what with the movie Black Swan opening this week. see the NYTimes article which begins with ‘ TEN years of serious training and then five more toiling in the ranks. That’s how many years of dedicated study it takes on average to become a principal ballerina at a top company.’ a quick rise to the top.

but back to our subject of Griselda Healy art exhibit ‘Figure in Motion‘ in the upstairs gallery of DNA. There is no charge for admission to the exhibit. Figure in Motion is a series of figure movement sequences; working from life with DNA founder Laurie De Vito’s company of seven dancers as models; it consists of drawings and oil sketches with graphite and charcoal materials on horizontal scroll lengths of paper.

Image: Sarah, Dance Sequence graphite and charcoal on paper 2010

Griselda Healy was born in St. James, Long Island, New York. She studied still-life and landscape painting with Paul Russotto before moving to Europe, where she studied and worked as a musician and artist. Healy recently relocated to Manhattan and now has a studio affiliated with the NARS Foundation in Brooklyn, NY. She is presently continuing her work with figure and context.

i am always amazed by the positive energy dancer students exude and DNA is full of that. it fills the air around them even when they are sitting still.

this picture reminds me of a conversation i had with a Radio City Music Hall Rockette during  a time we both worked the Christmas Show. She told me of her husbands friends in Atlanta reactions upon hearing she was a Rockette as being so ‘glamorous’  to which she smiled and nodded. she had thought of this conversation while sitting in the rehearsal hall floor dressed in sweaty tights, a t-shirt, eating an orange and dog tired. what a glamorous life. she couldn’t imagine her husband’s business associates siting on the floor. but that’s what dancers do when not dancing.

so go see this exhibit when you are downtown to see how drawing, painting, photography and dancing are all part of the human experience. enjoy the rich cultural offerings this city has to offer. hey check out DNA offerings and see one of their shows.

it’s a wonderful space it would be a shame to see them lose it after all the work they’ve put into the space.

new rules for shooting in NYC on DASC properties

July 28, 2010

here’s a link to the new rules governing filming and  photography in Department of Citywide Administrative Services  properties

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) and its predecessor City agencies have for more than twenty years allowed and supported film production activities on properties and within facilities under the jurisdiction of the agency. Given the frequency and complexity of filming activities by both amateurs and professionals, it has become necessary to codify the process that has been followed over time.

DCAS has adopted rules that govern filming and photography conducted on properties and within facilities under its jurisdiction, which require permits from the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting. These properties and facilities include various City buildings, such as the Manhattan and Brooklyn Municipal Buildings, all Borough Halls, and City and State Courts.

In order to conduct film or photography shoots in DCAS properties and facilities, DCAS approval must first be obtained prior to obtaining a required permit from MOFTB. Forms and documents required for DCAS review and approval must be submitted to the DCAS Film Office no later than four business days prior to the date on which prepping or rigging for shoots is set to commence.

Upon approval, a non-refundable fee of $3,200.00 shall accompany any application submitted to MOFTB for a required permit for filming or photography in DCAS properties and facilities. The fee shall be in the form of a certified bank check or money order, payable to the New York City Department of Finance.

The required fee shall be imposed for each instance in which prepping or rigging commences, is followed by shooting and/or photography for such production, and then is concluded by wrapping, de-rigging, and/or related activities.

The rules were initially published for comment in The City Record on August 25, 2009, and a public hearing was held on October 2, 2009. The adopted rules include changes made as a result of the comments submitted prior to and during the comment period and public hearing by members of the public, filming industry representatives, and City agency officials. The final adopted rules were published in The City Record on November 23, 2009.

The rules are in effect as of December 23, 2009. Click here to read the adopted rules in full.

Forbidden City, artistic opportunity, call for participation

Winkel & Balktick Present…

STRANDED III: The Forbidden City
Saturday, September 4, 2010

Open Meetings & Socials: 7/22, 8/5, 8/26

Stranded: The Forbidden City is a one-night foray into a magical metropolis of imagination, hidden inside an enormous warehouse in Brooklyn.  We are seeking installations, activities, performances, and games to entertain and delight the City’s tourists.  Projects that are all of those things at once are ideal.  Volunteers of all stripes are also welcome.

As the name suggests, the theme is an exploration of cities, past, present and future, real and imagined.  Of course, the title is a double-entendre, suggesting both Beijing’s dynasty-era grandeur, and also a libertine red light district.  Artists are free to explore either or both meanings, or simply run the laundromat of their dreams.

This is the third annual Stranded event.  It started on Labor Day weekend 2008 at the Brewery warehouse in Bushwick as a gathering for those unable to attend Burning Man.  Last year the event expanded to a 26,000 square foot warehouse palace in Sunset Park, and began attracting a wider variety of artists and attendees.  This year, we are going to continue the trend with more space, art and friends and raise the bar for creative revelry to skyscraper heights.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

This should provide you more information than you need about how to participate in Stranded 2010.

If your project requires a stipend, please apply no later than August 6.  The final deadline is August 20.  The submission process is detailed below, after the answers to all of the questions you have. Please understand that we may not be able to accommodate all submissions.

If you want to participate, but aren’t sure how, please fill out a volunteer form using the link below.

OPEN MEETINGS & WALKTHROUGHS

We will be holding open meetings and venue walkthroughs on Thursday, July 22, Thursday, August 5 and Thursday, August 26 from 7:30pm-10pm.  These are a great place to meet people, throw around and ideas, and have a good time.  Food and drink will be served.  The meeting location is in Dumbo.

RSVP to info@wandbnyc.com with the date of the meeting you with to attend.

URBAN RENEWAL

Artists are invited to construct an interactive establishment that one might find in The Forbidden City.  Projects that have an activity, performance other social interaction are strongly encouraged.

Take a familiar city institution or feature, and give it a creative twist.  Examples of potential establishments include post offices, jails, bus stops, libraries, banks, train stations, DMVs, parks, laundromats, stores and boutiques, theaters and entertainment venues, voter polling station, restaurants and cafes, courthouses, spas, galleries and of course, offices.

Standalone or roving sculpture and installation is also welcome, but priority may be given to establishments as described above.

THE CITY IS A STAGE

We will have a performance venue at the party.  If you have a stage act– musical, theatrical, comical or unclassifiable, please apply and include photos, audio or other samples of your work.  There is a limited amount of stage time, so please understand that we may not be able to accommodate all performances, or feature length works.

Note that we do not accept solicitations for DJs, but if you send us mixes, we will listen to them.

THE LAW OF THE LAND

A strong D.I.Y. ethic is important. We can provide the space for your project, a crowd to enjoy it, transportation assistance and a modest stipend, but it’s ultimately up to you to get it together, make it happen and clean it up afterwards.

Establishments may be anywhere from 100 square feet to 2,000 square feet.  While we welcome sound installations, we already have a live music and dance music venue and are not seeking others.  Your project should not be likely to combust, injure or kill anyone.  In general, we do not allow projects to charge money or solicit donations.

THE FORBIDDEN CITY BANK

We can pay for the cost of approved projects. These are guaranteed to be reimbursed, even if the event is not profitable. If the event is profitable, we tip out on top of this. Consider $0 – $500 the effective range for requests. We can also provide transportation assistance.  If you need a stipend, please apply ASAP.

Each project is a unique little snowflake, and we evaluate stipends on a case-by-case basis. Small budgets are easier to accommodate than large ones. On the other hand, if you have the greatest idea we’ve ever seen and a solid track record, we may be OK with splurging.

Note that in order to qualify for reimbursements for materials, you must keep your receipts and submit them to us in a timely manner.

ENOUGH TEASING! HOW DO I JOIN YOU?

If you have questions, contact the W&B creative director Eva at evalansberry@gmail.com.

Please fill out this form:
http://wandbnyc.com/forbiddenart

To make a submission, you will need to know the following information:

* Your name, and the names of other artists involved
* Your phone number
* A description of your project
* A detailed, itemized budget for materials and costs
* Setup duration
* Breakdown duration
* Will it require rigging from the ceiling or a wall?
* Will it make a mess?
* Might it accidentally injure, maim, or kill anyone?
* Floorspace requirements
* Electrical requirements
* Lighting requirements
* Any special placement requests

You will hear from us within three business days with questions, suggestions, etc. Sometimes we need to know more, have suggestions, or just need time to decide among many worthy proposals.

It may take up to ten business days to approve or decline your submission. If this wait is a problem, please let us know up front.

WHO ARE THE MAYORS OF THIS CITY?

Mark Winkel & Kevin Balktick are a pair of Brooklyn-based event producers. They met in 2005 when they became neighbors in a block-sized live/work warehouse in Dumbo. Over the course of five years, they have produced 12 feature events. In that time, their vision and following has grown from a single loft to cavernous warehouses.

Along with a dedicated community of artists, crew and volunteers, they transform mundane urban spaces into immersive fantasy environments. Their tools are larger-than-life installation art, extravagant costumes, decadent themes, surreal performances and action-packed dancefloors.

Their 2010 New Year’s Eve production, Transmutation , was held in a 30,000 square foot warehouse and was attended by 2,500 people. In February 2010, they were featured in a New York Times article about creative Brooklyn nightlife.

Bellyqueen performance, 3/28/2010

April 2, 2010

last sunday 3/28/2010 i designed lighting for this concert and brought my camera along, hey you never know. besides designing the lights i did the projection screen and put up the red fabric to give the show some production value. the Kraine theater is a small black box with a running show in place. we couldn’t do much focusing so all i had a chance to do was re-gel some lighting, otherwise we would have had no warmth to our show.

bellyqueen performance kraine theater nyc

i also ran the lighting board during the show and took these pictures from the booth. Kaeshi Chai the artistic director of Bellyqueen had some people come in and tape the show which i haven’t seen yet. this whole production was a family affair like one of those showbiz movies from the 40’s.

yes i did mange to get some in focus pictures but i find these types more interesting.

winter solstice

December 23, 2009

last winter i convinced mary to go up to st johns the divine to hear paul winters winter solstice celebration. living in new york one has exposure to all these wonderful events. i think it took me 28 years before i made my first solstice celebration so now i’ve made two of them.

this was something i though her grand daughters might enjoy but they are still too young or maybe they will never enjoy a music concert, mary doesn’t think it would be their cup of tea.

but we enjoyed it, maybe not as visual as the summer celebration i first saw but then again is anything able to match our first time at anything? for years i tried to match how great i felt or thought i felt with my first cigarette, although it might have been nauseous but cool. glad that’s over with.

at least now the day will be lengthening and it will soon be time to shed our wraps and let our bodies bask in the sun, woop tee do. i love bodies even this strange one appearing in my mirror everyday. were did that Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni body go?

but if you’ve been putting this off as i had done for years, i suggest you circle the date , mark you ical or what ever it is you do on 6/1/10 and look at living music site to book your tickets for the summer solstice celebration. st johns  is a wonderful music venue and maybe something will be reborn in you to sing and dance as if nobody is watching which they aren’t.

hey i even bought two cds so i can connect with those moments again lying in bed with my honey and howling at the moon. whooooooo . try it you might like it.
