Introduced in 2010 to support young photographers, the prestigious €25,000 Lacoste Elysée Prize is awarded by the Swiss Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne Switzerland, with sponsorship from Lacoste, the clothing brand.

The Musée de l’Elysée has decided to suspend the organisation of the Lacoste Elysée Prize 2011 in response to the decision of the organizers to exclude the work of Palestinian artist Larissa Sansour’s work.

Sansour was among eight finalists shortlisted for the 2011 prize

Eight nominees for the 2011 prize were selected to take part in the contest, and asked to produce three photographs on the theme la joie de vivre.

With the help of a grant of €4,000, each nominee had “carte blanche” to interpret the theme how they saw fit, whether directly or indirectly. The nominees were free to make a submission based upon their existing work or as an entirely new project.

An expert jury was scheduled to meet at the end of January 2012 to select the winner of the Lacoste Elysée Prize 2011.

Larissa Sansour was among the eight artists shortlisted for the 2011 prize. In December 2011, sponsor Lacoste demanded that Sansour’s nomination be revoked. Lacoste stated their refusal to support Sansour’s work, describing it as “too pro-Palestinian.”

In November 2011, three photos from Sansour’s ‘Nation Estate’ project were accepted, and she was congratulated by the prize administrators for her work and professionalism. Sansour’s name was subsequently included in all literature relating to the prize and on the website as an official nominee. Her name has since been removed, however, and her project was withdrawn from an upcoming issue of contemporary art magazine ArtReview introducing the nominated artists.

Sansour was asked to approve a statement saying that she voluntarily withdrew her nomination “in order to pursue other opportunities.” Sansour refused to agree to such a statement.

Sansour says, “I am very sad and shocked by this development. This year Palestine was officially admitted to UNESCO, yet we are still being silenced. As a politically involved artist I am no stranger to opposition, but never before have I been censored by the very same people who nominated me in the first place. Lacoste’s prejudice and censorship puts a major dent in the idea of corporate involvement in the arts. It is deeply worrying.”

Sansour’s multimedia project ‘Nation Estate’ was “conceived in the wake of the Palestinian bid for UN membership. Nation Estate depicts a science fiction-style Palestinian state in the form of a single skyscraper housing the entire Palestinian population. Inside this new Nation Estate, the residents have recreated their lost cities on separate floors: Jerusalem on 3, Ramallah on 4, Sansour’s own hometown of Bethlehem on 5, etc.

Sansour’s shortlisted work, ‘Nation Estate,’ conceived in the wake of the Palestinian bid for UN membership, is a multimedia science fiction project that imagines a future Palestinian state in the form of a skyscraper. The single skyscraper houses the entire Palestinian population, with residents recreating their lost cities on separate floors.

Sansour from Bethlehem is a prominent Palestinian artist and filmmaker. Her most recent film, ‘A Space Exodus,’ was nominated for the short-film category at the Dubai International Film Festival

The Musée de l’Elysée has announced its suspension of the 2011 Prize and has offered to exhibit ‘Nation Estate’ outside the framework of the prize and Lacoste’s sponsorship.

3rd edition of The Julia Margaret Cameron Award

December 8, 2011

for Women Photographers

Professional and non professional women photographers from all countries. On this occasion there will be only one section: pro and non-pro will be juried together.

Deadline:
   December 30th, 2011, at 11:59pm PST

Jurors:   Amber Terranova and Dina Bova.

Amber Terranova is the photo editor for Photo District News. She worked previously for New York magazine and Outside. She holds a BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts, Manhattan. Amber has assisted with programming at Center, a Santa Fe-based non-profit organization that supports photographers. Her taste in photography tends toward emerging and established artists with strong personal projects, surprising content and evidence of political or social engagement. She’s most drawn to introspective, provocative work.

Dina Bova was born in Moscow and currently lives in Israel. Her images have been awarded in Px3, Hasselbald Masters, Sony Awards, 1st edition of the JMCA, Nikon, PDN’s World in Focus, and have won 21 Gold medals in international photo-contests under FIAP/PSA patronage in USA, Austria, France, England, Croatia, Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel. Her art is a world of allegories, metaphors and multifaceted associations. She thinks that it’s not important how an artist creates his work. It can be created with any tool and any medium, but it should speak for itself and convey a very special mood. It should need no explanation, no elaboration and no apologies. It can be very aesthetic or the opposite of it. For Dina, the most important thing  is freeing the imagination.

Award:
The Julia Margaret Cameron Award will be given to 12 women photographers which will be invited to exhibit (and sell) their work in a very selective collective exhibition in Paris during 2013, honoring one hundredth year of the birth of Robert Capa, co-founder of Magnum Photos and famous war photojournalist. With National Breast Cancer Month (October) upon us (http://www.nbcam.org/), we want to throw our support behind some great organizations that are helping those patients, survivors, families and others that have been affected by this disease.

This Shoot Out photo contest is intended, mirroring the goal of NBCAM, to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

We want to really make a splash. We’ve got lofty goals for this contest and would love to see the total raised get OVER $100,000. To do this, WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need everyone to get the word out… share this on Facebook, Twitter, via email. Tell your friends, your neighbors, your clients, your kids’ friends… everyone.

The ‘starting pot’ will be $100 in total, but we want to see a truly inspiring number here. So help us get these numbers growing! Help us demonstrate the power of images to help raise awareness and money to make a difference!

We’ll be updating the prizing as the entries come in, so check back… and enter as often as you can! You’re supporting a great cause!

visiting Sarah Small’s ‘Tableau Vivant’ of the delirium constructions

May 25, 2011

monday night, may 23, i had the opportunity to volunteer on sarah’s new show out at Skylight One at the Williamsburg bank building in Brooklyn on her new production. sarah’s productions are  growing larger each time she does one. the last time she did one of these it was in powerhouse books in DUMBO. now she’s into a much larger venue with a larger cast and impressive performance.

Williamsburg Bank Building

i’ve know of her work for some time and have contacted her before about working on any upcoming project together, which never came about as she has her vision and i’ve mine. see her work at http://livingpictureprojects.com/ and mine at www.jeneyoutt.com we’re much different but we both work with nude & clothed bodies so we’ve a similar premise.

as her web site says “for the first time, this May, Small will be exploring, within the Tableau Vivant, a specific social phenomenon: the ritual of marriage. With its airs of pageantry and religious rectitude, wedding ceremonies celebrate the most intimate joining of two individuals in the most public manner, providing rich fodder for examination within the project’s framework. While the process is still developing, Small will act as the legal officiant for two couples as she simultaneously directs the attendant Tableau Vivant cast in their own explorations of the theme, mingling performance art with reality in a compelling cocktail.”

my work is more about how we hide what we reveal but covering ourselves up. i am also interested in a personal quest of self discovery which i began years ago having what would be categorized as a religious experience but at the time i had no idea what had happened during a aikido meditative moment. it’s been a long journey with many delightful discoveries, but as the saying goes, self discovery isn’t always good news.

Sarah Small directing 'Tableau Vivant'

Sarah Small directing 'Tableau Vivant'

well that’s the big Tableau picture and there were many photographers wandering around cameras clicking and zooming shooting videos and pictures, what i usually do is to take in the whole scene then see what interests me. after all this isn’t a commercial job or wedding more like fun, that’s it FUN that’s why i do photography for the fun of creating it. i’ve worked since i was 14 years old now it’s time to have more fun in life.

sarah small taking a picture of her 'Tableau Vivant'

she is shooting with a canon camera through a L series lens which i also own. so what could i add to this scene? here we are in a beautiful classic bank building………….. look around you what do you see?

ceiling of Williamsburg bank clandelier

ceiling of Williamsburg bank chandelier

this reminds me of the Byzantine Cathedral in St Marks Square in Venice Italy, talk about cool. i can imagine the immigrant family walking into this bank depositing their hard earned pennies and being impressed, who wouldn’t? where is the america and americans who built buildings like these. now banks are just plain hollow walls with automatic tellers and cameras. empty spaces to be filled with the next dry cleaner tenant, what have we wrought on ourselves america?

another chandelier

life is about looking around especially in photography. there is a photographic exercise where one is confined to a 10′ square area having to find photographic subject matter. well here we are

so you can see i was pretty busy during rehearsals discovering things, someone had draped the front doors to prevent people from couldn’t seeing the naked people inside who were there to be seen as part of this evening performance, yea i know. but this was exactly my kind of picture.

there are always moments to straighten out technical problems and have discussion as to what the artist wants

sarah small discussing small technical issues

now i figured everything was covered and i might as well find something constructive to do to help out and earn my keep. i found two young ladies stuffing programs and helped them fold & assemble the programs, then i helped bring ice in for the bar and generally hung around being helpful. but here is what you’ve all waited so patiently for. i retired to the balcony over the front entrance for my view of the beginning

the beginning

 the awaking

'Tableau Vivant' of the delirium constructions

i really just watched and listened, after all if my eyes are looking through a view finder they really aren’t seeing and experiencing the whole performance. i loved the music by meredith monk and the voices of the awakened tableau. yes i tried out the video portion of my camera and found other limitations of it. one can’t pan, zoom & focus at the same time without growing another hand. but who needs sharp images when making a video?

little did i know that the balcony was part of the grand finally. so more ghosts appeared

Diogenes daughter revealed living in NYC

February 9, 2011

this going to be a rambling post because that’s what i am feeling now. i don’t have my best listener here, it’s been 9 days since shadow passed away. i am slowly putting her stuff away bit by bit. why am i saving it? don’t really know, maybe i’ll want another dog but not soon.

life is moving along, i shouldn’t have any complaints now, no one to listen to them anyways. what ever problems i have i’ve created them myself because of the way i deal with or not deal with life. at least now i can turn up the music loud; Blondie ‘no exit’ and drown out the world without worrying about hurting doggies ears.

odd how these days come and go. yesterday was a lovely treat. i got a nice present in the form of a phone conversation that i didn’t expect. a young model came over to the studio wanting to work with me. she saw my work on a model mayhem page and asked to do a shoot. hey why not?

portrait of a young girl with gold chain

young woman portrait

i do portraits but i also wanted to explore women’s lingerie. open my horizons as it were. when i was a young man the only thing i thought about it was how fast i could get it removed but as i’ve aged i appreciate them more. i like to get pretty things for my honey, i think mary gets embarrassed when we go shopping for undergarments but i like the way she looks in them. it’s still a process of getting them off her but i like to know how pretty she looks under her clothes.

people contact me about all kinds of shoots and at some point i have to ask ‘ have you seen my portfolio? ‘ so it’s nice to find someone who has and likes to improv as i do. we began with her dressed in a white corset outfit and like every other thing in life new beginnings are delicate dance.

young woman

cute huh. but we were both pretty bored with this setting  so we moved the chair out of the way and i decided to explore something i’ve been think to do.

white corset

then CB we move in for our close up

young girl in white corset

white corset back

closer

close-up

corset laces

and i became fascinated with how close i could get with my lens, it not being a micro, and still get an erotic feeling to this session. so i moved the model around looking for interesting compositions. as i said we were both exploring, it’s not brain surgery.

white thong

but i would suggest if you’re photographing nudes it might be wise to do it in a warm studio. yes the lights do help somewhat and i wasn’t cold wearing a t-shirt but it might effect the pictures if it’s a bit chilly.

woman's boob with shadow

notice a lovely picture of goose bumps. we both like this picture but it’s not going to get this model any work without an explanation. oh well. then she asked if we could do something with a lantern she had seen on a shelf. ‘sure why not?’

Diogenes daughter

she didn’t know who Diogenes was but i am sure people won’t even ask seeing this picture. she loved this when she saw it. i am not sure if i like this one or the one below better.  she loved this picture as one she could send home to mom. that’s nice, i like helping young girls sending wholesome pictures back home from new york, ‘look mom what i’ve been up to?’

i did think she could show this picture to her grand children as to how she looked as a young woman, maybe not something you share with your children but grand children seem safely removed. they might never imagine what you looked like as a youngster.

Diogenes daughter listens

but what the heck we both had fun and no animals were hurt in the process.

the great naked Leica M9 give-away

January 5, 2011

January 5th 2011 – THE GREAT LEICA M9 GIVE-AWAY CONTEST HAS BEGUN!

The time has come! The Leica M9 Give-Away has begun! Read on for the details…the rules…and how YOU can win this Leica M9 signed by both Seal and myself on the inside bottom plate. Spread the word to all of your photo friends and send them here so they can also enter this amazing contest! ONE OF YOU READING THIS NOW WILL WIN THIS LEICA M9!

THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF Seal (~6)

The Black M9 that we are giving away was donated by ~6 (Seal) which was his previous personal M9. He just recently received his gorgeous Titanium M9 ( see his post HERE) so he kindly donated his black M9 to this site so we could give it away in this contest.  Not only that…since NO ONE has ever given away a $7000 Leica M9, the inside bottom plate will be signed by both of us to mark this special occasion!

What most of you already know is that the man who posts here as “~6″  is the recording artist and photographer Seal. If you did not know that, now you do. This contest/giveaway was his idea and when he approached  me about it I was VERY excited. I mean, what other website has given away something like a Leica M9? Seal is not only intensely passionate about music, but also photography and I am proud to call him on of my dearest friends. How cool is it that he has donated his personal BLACK M9 to give away here? IT’s AMAZINGLY INCREDIBLE!

Since he has been so generous with the M9 donation for the up coming contest I wanted to mention HIS new website.

Just recently Seal has launched a very cool photo website called picortwo.com and I urge you to go check it out and register to follow your favorite photographer. Basically you can follow any photographer on the site..Seal, his wife Heidi, or any of the other photographers on the site. Just by entering your e-mail address you will recieve a pic or two in your mailbox every day that they took during the day.

For example, if you are following Seal, every day you will get a pic or two in your email that he shot THAT DAY. It’s like you are following the daily life of the photographer you follow. So make sure you go check it out at picortwo.com. Browse the photographers and follow whoever you like. It’s REALLY cool and REALLY fun.

What you have been waiting for! How you can enter and win this camera!

Anyone can enter and anyone can win. Well, anyone who is passionate about photography that is. We wanted to make sure that whoever wins it will cherish it and USE it for their photography. Hell, I would love to have it myself but I would rather give it away to a reader here who has that passion and love for photography. That is what this site is all about..the passion!

So here is how to enter, along with the rules:

It is a photo submission contest  but it is about telling a story with only 2 photos. This is called “sequential narrative photography” or creating a photo narrative. This can be challenging, fun, and also spark your creative juices. In case you need some pointers, Here is a description I found online of a photo narrative.

These photos can be of any subject but you must pic a topic for your story. Just make sure that the images form a narrative and tell a story. The only thing being judged here is the two photos and the topic/title.

Also, just for my information, along with the photos tell me something about yourself (just a short 2-3 sentences) and why a Leica M9 would help you in your photographic journey. That is it. This contest is NOT about what equipment you use to take the shots. As a matter of fact, you can use a cel phone to take the images and yes, a cel phone image may just win. Again, it is NOT about the equipment but more about the photos as a set.

How the winners will be chosen..

At the deadline, all submissions will be looked over and I will pick the top 10. After that, the top 10 will be sent directly to the two final judges who will pick the winners.

Who are the two final judges? Seals wife, Heidi Klum and professional photographer Rankin will do the honor of choosing the first and second place winners. Yep, this contest is big time now and yes, there is a 2nd place price which is being supplied by Leica Camera themselves! Exciting huh?

The Prizes:

The 1st place prize:

A black Leica M9 which is slightly used. This was Seal’s personal M9 and will be signed by the both of us on the inside bottom plate. This is a $7000 camera if buying new.

The 2nd place prize:

The 2nd place prize will be a new in box Leica V-Lux 2 supplied by Leica Camera. $849 value. Pretty cool huh?

THE FIVE STEPS TO WINNING THE LEICA M9

OK here is how you can officially enter this contest.

Step 1:

You must go over to picortwo.com and register and follow at least one photographer at the site. For example, yuo can follow Seal, Heidi or Rankin and you will get an e-mail with their pics when they submit a pic or two from their daily lives. This step is mandatory! If you are already registered then move to Step 2.

Step 2:

You must also be registered at this site. When you register here this will allow you to not only enter all contests but will also allow you to post in the forums and take part in future activities here on the site. So after you register over at picortwo.com you must register here. To do so, click HERE. This step is also mandatory! If you are already registered here, move to Step 3.

Step 3:

Take your photos. To enter you must submit only 2 photos that form a story. We must be able to know what is going on by looking at the photos so because of this there will be no text explaining the photos, just your topic. For example your topic could be called “People in the Park”. Take 2 photos that form a narrative and number them in sequential order. Submit them to me at my e-mail stevehuff1@mac.com along with your name, address, e-mail address, age, topic title and tell me about you and your photographic passion (but keep it short and brief..no essays). Photos must be shot between now and the deadline date of February 5th 2011.

Step 4:

HELP SPREAD THE WORD!

I want as many photographers to know about this as possible. I want EVERYONE to be able to have a shot at this so help me spread the word by tweeting this, or by posting it to your facebook (you can use the handy buttons at the top of this page to do so), or mentioning it wherever you can – digg, forums, or wherever! Just linking back to this page will help tremendously and make this contest a success. If it is a success, more will come :) This is not a mandatory step of course, but will help me out a bit.

Step 5:

Get excited and Wait. I will be accepting submissions starting today, January 5th 2011. Submissions will end on February 5th 2011. The contest duration is 30 days. On February 15th I will post the top 10 winners on this site along with their photos. The top 10 will then go to Heidi Klum and Rankin for final selection. The winner will be announced on March 1st 2011 and the Leica M9 will be shipped out to the winner by March 15th 2011.

The 2nd place winner will win a Leica V-Lux 2 supplied by Leica Camera. Both cameras will be shipped by me via FedEx to the winners no later than March 15th 2011.

THE RULES – Follow them or be disqualified! READ READ READ! IMPORTANT!

  1. You must register at picortwo.com and stevehuffphoto.com to be eligible to enter and win. Again, to be clear – you will only be eligible to win if your name and email address is registered at both websites. See steps 1 & 2 above to do this.
  2. When you submit your images make them no larger than 1300 pixels wide but also no smaller than 680 pixels wide.
  3. You must submit TWO images that form a narrative to enter and win.
  4. Include your name, address, email address, age, and topic title with the submission and a short note about you and your passion for photography.
  5. Photos can be taken with ANY camera – film, digital, or even a cel phone. This is not about the gear you are using to take the photos but more about the photos themselves.
  6. You can submit only ONE SET of images that tell a story – no text explaining what the story it, just a topic title. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON.
  7. Photos for this contest must be taken between the submission dates (1/05/11 – 02/05/11). In other words, they must be taken for this contest. No old photos allowed.
  8. EXIF Data must be present in the photos so I can verify dates. If you do not know what this means then you should be OK. Basically do not strip the EXIF data! If shooting film, just let me know the dates you shot the film.
  9. Contest begins on 1/05/11 and the deadline for your submission will be 2/05/11. Top 10 will be chosen by Steve Huff on 2/15/11 and they will be posted on the site for all to see. The final two winners will be chosen by Heidi Klum and Rankin and announced on March 1st 2011.
  10. The 1st prize is a black Leica M9 signed by Seal and Steve Huff. This was the personal M9 of Seal, so it is used but in great shape. The 2nd place prize will be a new Leica V-Lux 2.
  11. THIS IS A WORLDWIDE CONTEST! No matter where you live, you can enter!
  12. Steve Huff, Seal, and family members are not eligible to enter or win (Damn!)
  13. The decision of all judges is FINAL. No complaining, no whining and no bitching allowed in the comments. Keep it fun and let’s all have a good time.
  14. Finally, your submitted images may be shown on the site if you make the top 10 so you are giving rights for me to show your images here if you make it.

TELL A STORY WITH PHOTOGRAPHS!

There are several ways to tell a story with sequential photos that reveal a moment, or a narrative. Get your creative juices flowing.

NARRATIVE: A good story has a beginning, middle, and an end. Lots of information can be told in as little as two photos but basically we want to be able to look at the photos and see the story. Get creative and be confident. ANYONE can win. Do not worry about what you use to shoot with as we are not looking for the best technical quality or highest resolution. If you have the ability to tell a great story with photographs then you deserve and have a great chance to win the M9.

SEQUENTIAL PHOTOS: Maybe you want to submit a set of photos that reveal a moment? For example, maybe you are shooting in the street and you see something funny that happens and can be caught within 2 frames. Does it reveal a moment or tell a story? If so, send them in. Have fun out there and get creative.

AS ALWAYS, I NEED YOUR HELP TO KEEP THIS SITE GOING AND GROWING!

Again, this site has been able to stick around and grow over the past  two years thanks you YOU, the readers. Those who come here every day to see whats new, to see the passion of photography alive and well and to join in the discussions.

Thanks to you guys helping me out with buying your photo gear from my links to B&H Photo and Amazon and supporting my sponsors like Dale Photo and J-Tec. Let’s not forget Ken Hansen who has been a true friend AND a great Leica dealer. So without that support, this site would not be where it is today and this contest would not exist.

So here are those direct links again and if you ever need any photo related gear you can use the B&H Photo Link HERE (not able to bookmark the B&H link, must be clicked on from this site). If you like AMAZON, anything you buy there will help me out with pennies on the dollar (it adds up) and you can use that link HERE (and can bookmark the Amazon link!). You can also use the handy search boxes on the upper right side of any page.

Also, be sure to follow me on twitterfacebook and my RSS feed here. This all helps me out! Also, for more discussion you can visit my forums here on the site :)
