new female nudes

June 5, 2010

just fooling around the other day with a new aspiring female model that another photographer had booked for this shoot  inviting me along to share expenses . dave and i have worked together in the past on projects but i had never worked in his studio before. i have a way of taking over a shoot if it’s just left to my devices and dave has no problem letting me do whatever it is that i do.

having fun

i try and shoot using one light while dave uses 3 or 4 lights, hey we are all different and there is no one right way of working. but i think for these shots i need to have a backlight for separation. but because of the low ceiling height and the size of dave’s strobes hanging one would not work, so i a though this morning about making a 45 degree reflector for my white lightnings. it should be simple enough, ding! where have i heard that noise before? was i when i bought the xr7 which still isn’t on the road yet?

female nude

pattern

this is where i get bored just popping off photos , how many naked women remain interesting to just look at. i am sure it’s different for everybody but i have a woman at home that i am particular about. so here i used a cloth with large weave to project this pattern.

female nude

standing naked

so as i kept tripping over her boots i asked her to put them on, at least i’d know where they were. then adding a chair always looking for interesting patterns.

then i got bored again as dave continued to shoot and dug around for a new location in the studio picked this one as a homage to helmut newton at least i like to think so.

nude leaning

while this image is far from perfect, way too much spill on the background, i had nothing to control the spill with, oh well lets shoot and see what happens. time is money. i guess when i find another interesting model i’ll revisit this location.

so i really don’t have much time to update my web site nor do i want to because i am not really fond of it. i post my new stuff here.

new york photo festival outtakes or maybe intakes

April 27, 2010

i am trying to select a series of photos to enter in the NYPF that closes 5/1/10 and i am finding it really hard maybe because of the amount of images 5 to 15 and what might at least win. win what ever? my work is somewhere between photography and……….. well i really don’t know. yet today i got a check from a gallery for one of my images selling. some people buy my work and i am always surprised.

the real fun about entering these contest is going through my hard drives looking for images and finding some like the ones below.

but i always knew about this since i have prints of this hanging on my wall, these were done 2008 so that was some time ago but the other images i had forgotten about. this image below is from a completely different session using the same red cloth but in a totally different way.

red cloth wrap

one is a dancer the other is not, but the cloth is still red silk. the reason i think these images work besides them being lovely young women in shadows is for the red silk. the one below i remember working on the cloth bring out the redness but i had forgotten about it.

female nude

letting go

it reminds me of a crane or stork.

a lovely image  the way the light reveals the female body yet keeps the mystery. this is one of the reason i left the manhattan figure study & lighting workshop. i need to work on my own discovering these moments. i also don’t like to share my work even though i do.

it’s like my personal relationship with mary, a journey, discovering new things along the way. that’s life

Boobquake

April 26, 2010

when i first heard the news report of the Iranian cleric blaming scantily clad  woman  boobs of causing earthquakes i chuckled thinking that yes some of them have had a profound effect on me, sometimes my hands shook as i touched them or thought about touching them, but never the ground underneath me.

i remember my first earthquake happening when i, naked except for being covered with soap in the shower,  had to think fast as the ground beneath my bathtub began to shake and  remembering earthquake preparedness lessons as i grabbed a towel and stood in the bathroom doorway. after the first shock wave we, the family and i, ran out of the house into the drive way along with all our other neighbors. i still felt kind of silly in my towel.

earthquakes are pretty scary things but i’ve never felt that way looking eye to eye with a boob. but Ms. Jen McCreight, an American twentysomething student thought she’d do something to support science and make t shirts for Boobquake day.

yes virgina there is a boobquake facebook page showing ms mc creight in her earthquake outfit.

this though is not ms. mc creight but a lovely woman in the prime of her life. humans are beautiful i think it’s a crime to cover beauty with ignorance.

todays experiment

April 22, 2010

well after having a bad family portrait day the other weekend i tried to arrange a session with another flaky no-show model, who didn’t show, due to illness and doctors advice, she didn’t know she was sick with a fever. where do they come from?

i had set up some strobes in my studio in anticipation for her session but shadow my only other model  doesn’t like to have her picture taken. but my honey came into the city to go to Photo Salon last night and volunteered to sit for me. i shot two cards and showed her how to use the Sekonic 508  light meter. i think we got some nice shots from the session.

this one below is a favorite from the first of the session. i don’t think anyone of us, i know i don’t have, the model feel, if there is such a thing.  it’s a pretty special talent to go through actions that emote a special feeling,  unless you’re part of and aware of the moment it’s pretty hard to appreciate but the picture says everything.

this one just captures the one i love, unadorned except for the heart i gave her for christmas and red lipstick.

Live Nudity at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC

March 19, 2010

NEW YORK, NY.- The human form, disrobed and displayed in all its glory, is arguably the most enduring motif in the history of Western art. Museums dedicated to art both ancient and modern are filled with nudes rendered every which way: painted, chiseled, molded, sketched and photographed.

They’re just usually not living and breathing. But New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will host daily performances of five seminal works by Marina Abramović, three of which feature performers in the altogether. In Imponderabilia (1977), two players stand opposite each other, au naturel, in a narrow doorway. Visitors must brush past them to enter the exhibition—an early, if awkward, example of interactive art. On exhibition 14 March through 31 May, 2010.

and if you time your visit right you can also see a rareity from Germany in “World on a Wire”, 1973. Germany. Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Pictured: Barbara Valentin. Courtesy: Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation.

NEW YORK, NY.- ‘World on a Wire’ (1973), written and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (German, 1945–1982) and based on the novel Simulacron-3 by American author Daniel F. Galouve, will have a weeklong run at MoMA, from April 14 through April 19, 2010. Originally made for German television in 1973, Fassbinder’s revolutionary adaptation has only been shown in America once before, in 1997, as part of a comprehensive Fassbinder retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art.

while i’ve never understood all of his films i’ve always found him interesting and knowing that Michael Ballhaus did some of the cinematography is an education in it’s self.

I first fell in love with Fassbinder for his “Berlin Alexanderplatz” done in 14 episodes, 1980 and shown on PBS when PBS filled it’s mandate of bringing quality television to the airways. now PBS is just a shadow of it’s former self especially the new york stations. i think the nyc stations should be taken off the air.

now for the third contest  i submitted  the females from above to The Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints Ltd.

boy that was some work day which i don’t usually put myself through because i try to submit long before the deadlines, but somehow things got away from me this year. hope this isn’t a harbinger of the year to come.

i’d be happy with any of these associations because looking at past winners  i’d be in some pretty good company. tomorrow i have to pack up my Ascending print and send it off to C4fap.

woohoo the day is done .

C4FAP ‘Motion’ selection

January 29, 2010

well i’ve had one of my images selected for a c4fap Motion shows coming up this spring. i also have a cold as does mary, these things happen when we are out and about in the world.

nude female leaping upward

Ascending

i’ve made a package for the image and have downloaded the forms needing to accompany the framed print. one really should never have to read instructions and understand them when one doesn’t feel good. it’s just too much to understand nor wanting to comply with. i’d rather lay down on the couch, turn on tv and see what’s going on in soap opera world and put my head gently down on a pillow waiting for oprah to come along and lull me to sleep.

i’ve time to think about all this and since it’s 23 degrees outside i don’t need to trudge off to UPS and send the package. besides they want an artist statement. do you think they accept a note saying i’d rather take a nap?

i’ve plenty of time as the show isn’t until march 19 thru april 17 2010.

busy week as i am going over to meet the people who run the 52nd Street Project tonight and see one of their shows. the project is about helping the neighborhood kids expresses themselves using theater and since we are living in the theater district capital of the world, arrogant statement for sure but this is broadway. i think it’s nice to give back to the community who supported me and i know that one person can make a difference in another’s life.

i’ll always be grateful for Joe coming into my life, a newark policeman who read my families dynamic and offered me friendship instead of telling me what i should do. me being a teenage i wasn’t too open for advice as i knew everything but he was there with a friendly place for me to go when i needed another perspective.

i think everyone needs places like that in their lives.

so i’ll just not do too much thinking today and maybe take a nap. we can all benefit from my doggie’s suggestion on this cold winter day.

what i did to waste my time today

January 13, 2010

the task at hand was trying to fix a Lightroom error message which i finally did by deleting the preference phist files and the LR folder in adobe application support. well that was pretty easy, now on to the major problem of moving the picture files from one HD to another.

well i read the forums which were written in martian, well they could have been for all i understood, but i tried a number of times following the instructions all to naught. but i did manage to find these couple of images from a shoot this spring, well actually last spring

don't look

it seems it’s always like this, i do the session with the model and think i never get anything except a few good pics then i move on. later in life i come back to the folder and find these gems. well i think they are pretty nice.

all this comes at a time when i am reading Taschens art book on Caravaggio explaining his life and  times and showing absolutely gorgeous reproductions of Caravaggio’s paintings.

Caravaggio, for me, is one of the creators of chiaroscuro painting which i happen to like and seem to emulate in my work especially in this series. you have to realize i am more of an artist than just another shooter. i use a camera as a tool no more, no less. maybe the members of photography gallery were right in not wanting me to show my work there, their loss not mine.

the fall

this is one of two images almost the same and tonight  through my foggy brain i can’t make up my mind which one i like. well it’s not something i have to do now or forever. life is like that .

being an artist isn’t as easy as it seems. this morning i gave mary some feedback on her breast cancer grant proposal draft for the labor of love pix blog.

mary wehrhahn has been a great supporter of my work and i think shes got some great stuff on her web site, i especially love some of the lighting because i did it. but she is coming into her own and maybe time for me to retire and enjoy the ride.

time to lay my head on the pillow with something to read before i fall asleep. good night all

winter solstice

December 23, 2009

last winter i convinced mary to go up to st johns the divine to hear paul winters winter solstice celebration. living in new york one has exposure to all these wonderful events. i think it took me 28 years before i made my first solstice celebration so now i’ve made two of them.

this was something i though her grand daughters might enjoy but they are still too young or maybe they will never enjoy a music concert, mary doesn’t think it would be their cup of tea.

but we enjoyed it, maybe not as visual as the summer celebration i first saw but then again is anything able to match our first time at anything? for years i tried to match how great i felt or thought i felt with my first cigarette, although it might have been nauseous but cool. glad that’s over with.

at least now the day will be lengthening and it will soon be time to shed our wraps and let our bodies bask in the sun, woop tee do. i love bodies even this strange one appearing in my mirror everyday. were did that Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni body go?

but if you’ve been putting this off as i had done for years, i suggest you circle the date , mark you ical or what ever it is you do on 6/1/10 and look at living music site to book your tickets for the summer solstice celebration. st johns  is a wonderful music venue and maybe something will be reborn in you to sing and dance as if nobody is watching which they aren’t.

hey i even bought two cds so i can connect with those moments again lying in bed with my honey and howling at the moon. whooooooo . try it you might like it.

Hell’s Kitchen Artist Studio Tour Nov 7-8 2009

October 30, 2009

well for those of you who would like to meet me i’ll be opening my studio during this event located at

Youtt, 427 51st Street, 3A, New York, NY, 10019 between 9th & 10th Ave., 212 664 1039

hell's kitchen artist studio tourHKArtiST(2)

the tour actually begins on Nov 6 with an opening party at Bar 9 on Tenth Ave but i’ll be at Emmanuel’s opening that night.

as this is the first event of this kind in the neighborhood i am hoping to meet some of my fellow artists whom i pass on the street anonymously. so far i’ve met a few very talented artists, one woman had a postcard of one of her watercolors which i recognized immediately as the lobby of the Paris Opera house. how cool is that?

maps will be available at Fountain Gallery, 702 9 Ave, NYC on the corner of 9th Ave & 48th Street. beginning Nov 6, 2009.see www.artistinthekitchen.org for more information.

i am hoping mary will baby sit a bit so i can visit some other studios.

so if you’d like to meet me and say hello or better yet buy one of my prints, actual SALE of some odd sized prints returned from a show i had in Kyoto, Japan do stop by.

i had suggested we buy balloons to display aiding location for the visitors. if lost give a call.

see you then.
