two gallery openings last night

last night i made the effort to leave my safe warm house to attend two photography show openings. the first gallery was the Aperture Foundation Gallery and Bookstore opening of ‘Angry Black Snake’ by Michael Corridore which runs from 2/25/2010 thru 4/8/2010, 547 W 27th street, 4th floor, New York, NY 10001.

In the words of Aperture book publisher Lesley A. Martin, “Corridore’s project, Angry Black Snake, is an exercise in minimalism. Each image has been pared down to the barest of elements—urgent gestures and barely traceable figures cloaked in smoke and dust. Yet each image pulses with palpable emotional tension, telegraphed by these barest of representational sketches and the subtle shifting colors of the clouds that descend upon each scene like a flimsy curtain.”

but what i found really exciting at aperture  was the exhibit ‘ No Singing Allowed‘ Flamenco & Photography which runs 2/6/2010 thru 4/6/2010,  with prints supplied from collections from all over the world. Yes they have an accompanying book for sale. in the web page notes

Whether as social phenomenon or musical expression, flamenco has been of enduring interest and inspiration to photographers from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. While some photographers from outside of Spain went in search of it or encountered it by chance, to others flamenco and its practitioners are an essential, if not innate, aspect of their cultural heritage and their photographic work. This artistic form—also considered a way of life or being—has generated fascination in cultured urban circles, remaining one of the most secret, mysterious, and seductive manifestations of twentieth-century European popular art. Marginalized and ostracized, the world of flamenco took root in an economically backward region of southern Europe, culturally peripheral and marked by a history of authoritarianism and local despotisms. This exhibition of more than one hundred and fifty years of images, frequently taken by foreigners rather than Spaniards, is an extensive survey of how photographers of different eras have approached the universe of flamenco, whether documenting the dance itself, gestures that recall it, or the culture that is developed around it.

way cool was the best discovery of the night Wendy Paton’s work at Sous Les Etoies Gallery, 560 Broadway,#205, NY, NY 0012, 212 966 796, runs from 3/11/2010 thru 4/30/2010. her show is called Visages De Nuit consisting of a series of gelatin silver black & white candid night images that are intended to provoke compelling and mysterious emotions of uncertainly .

the gallery program says Wendy Paton ‘allows herself to disappear in order to let her subjects emerge from the night.’ ” my experience is that people act differently a night. they let their guard down.they become who they really are, or they transform themselves into someone,real or imagined,that the want to be. there are seemingly no restrictions at night. life seems to become more free flowing as opposed to how people tend to act in the light of day” she says.

but at the opening Wendy was the shining light with her red hair,  busy talking to everybody, it surely was her night and she looked lovely. good luck

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site seeks proposals for its 2011 tour season. The historic site will fund a maximum $7,500.00 per project. This funding includes approval to exhibit during the next exhibition cycle. All projects that are approved will be installed for one full tour season (March through November), unless the artist proposal states otherwise.

The proposal deadline (for all funding and approvals) is Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 4 pm. This is not a deadline for a postmark, but for delivery at the historic site.

What a busy day, march came in like a lion today

i had three art contest deadlines today.

one in france, The Prix de la Photographie Paris 2010 which i submitted a series called Man. last year i got an honorable mention in the 2009 contest and we are trying to go to europe again this summer. hoping to see the Caravaggio exhibit in Rome  Italy  at the Scuderie del Qurionale

then another series submitted to the Xto Image Awards Calling all photographers and illustrators inspired by the human form to submit their work to the Xto Image Awards.  The final deadline is March 1, 2010.

Awards: $2000- Top Overall and $1000-Runner-Up; An exhibit in Los Angeles for the top two winners of each category.

The exhibit will be April 1-7, 2010 at the Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. The winners celebration will be held April 3, 2010, 7pm-10pm in conjunction with MOPLA.

boy that was some work day which i don’t usually put myself through because i try to submit long before the deadlines, but somehow things got away from me this year. hope this isn’t a harbinger of the year to come.

i’d be happy with any of these associations because looking at past winners  i’d be in some pretty good company. tomorrow i have to pack up my Ascending print and send it off to C4fap.

new york art week

the first week in march here in the city is full of art events starting with the huge armory show right down to the smallest gallery events. how does one manage to see it all, beats me. i’ve never been able to stay on my feet that long and trudging through the crowds just rattles my nerves.

but mary and i manage to give it the old school try untill our feet give out. we start at the armory show then plan our way from there, usually it’s home because that show is so large. we always go to red dot particular to see other smaller galleries and friends. but this year the list of events is so large we will need to pick and chose what we can fit in given our time frame.

Submissions Open for FIGMENT Events in NYC and Boston

In June 2007, a group of New Yorkers came together for a new kind of arts event on Governors Island in New York Harbor—FIGMENT, a free event in which everyone is invited to participate and collaborate to create artwork and build community. By 2009, FIGMENT had grown to a 3-day event, in which over 13,000 participants came to interact and engage with over 400 participatoryarts projects. FIGMENT also presented several summer-long projects, including an 18-hole mini golf course designed by artists and a 16-piece large-scale interactive sculpture garden, which were enjoyed by an estimated 40,000 people from June through October.  As FIGMENT grows beyond the New York City area to launch FIGMENT Boston, and further expands its NYC presence, artists are invited to participate.

Submissions are now open for 2010 FIGMENT events in New York City (June 11-13) and Boston (June 5).  Art projects in every imaginable medium are welcome, including sculpture, installation, performance, music, workshops, activities, games, visual art, and electronic art.  In addition, FIGMENT is also accepting proposals until March 1 for its summer-long exhibitions on New York’s Governors Island: the FIGMENT Sculpture Garden and Mini Golf Course. Below is a summary of our current calls for participation:

CALL FOR ARTISTS, No Chains Project

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Summary No Chains, a collaborative project undertaken by the two worker cooperatives “20th of December” (La Alameda) in Argentina and “Dignity Returns” in Thailand, seeks artists, designers, and activists to assist in creating images for a global “sweat-free” brand of t-shirts to be launched in April 2010. The application deadline is 25 February 2010. Five submissions will be chosen by the joint vote of both cooperatives in early March 2010 and produced as t-shirts that will be marketed to ethical consumers and distributed among unions, NGOs, labor activists as part of an international campaign to promote non-exploitative garment production, international labor solidarity, and sustainable workers’ self-management.

Background On 12th March 2009 a representative from La Alameda met with members of the Dignity Returns cooperative in Bangkok. After discussing the factories’ respective goals and difficulties, members decided to jointly produce and advertise sweat-free goods both to act as a model for viable worker-operated garment production and to raise awareness about non-exploitative labor. Expanding their existing media networks and activist alliances, both cooperatives would participate in a coordinated campaign about safe and ethical consumption, while addressing abuses specific to the garment industry’s global supply chain, which depends upon the exploitation of gendered, migrant, and subcontract labor in Argentina, Thailand, and throughout the global South.  

Aims The No Chains project model will hold quarterly t-shirt design contests that invite the direct collaboration of artists, designers, and art collectives with the workers of La Alameda and Dignity Returns, of which February 2010’s selection will be the first installment. The momentum generated by a joint brand consistently renewed by artists’ participation, coupled with each cooperative’s longstanding commitment to labor activism, will enable No Chains to serve as a platform that highlights various labor struggles throughout the globe, connecting artists, consumers, and supporters at these important global flashpoints. While maintaining this momentum through the projects’ stability, both La Alameda and Dignity Returns will remain open to the prospect of collaborating with other worker-owned factories that wish to join in producing under the No Chains brand.

Submission Specifications

The Design The design must represent the general theme of “No Chains”. T-shirt designs may be produced using any visual medium, but should:

1)    be suitable for silkscreen reproduction on various colors of cotton fabric.

2)    use a maximum of three colors.

3)    be in .jpg file format.

The Artist/Designer

1)    Please include a brief artist/collective bio, along with an optional artists’ statement. It may be 50-150 words long (if in English or Spanish). The file should be in MS Word, Open Office Writer, or as an .rtf file.

2)    Artists must either grant the copyright of their submitted designs to No Chains, or place their design under a Creative Commons license by which No Chains is authorized to produce shirts bearing the design.

Translation Offered If Necessary We are happy to assist with translation of brief phrases into Spanish, English, or Thai. However, please remember that because of the broad scope of existing labor networks, from Brussels to Jakarta to Porto Alegre to Seoul, it is best to communicate through a visual graphic image rather than through words. Submission Please submit your design or any further queries electronically by email to art@nochains.org by 25 February 2010.   Remember: images must be as .jpeg files, and the description of the artist must be as Word/Open Office/.rtf files.   Selection Process Maintaining a commitment to collective principles, the full memberships of both groups will decide on the selection of the five winning images by vote, and the results will be informed to the winning artists and also announced on the No Chains website www.nochains.org in early March 2010. The t-shirts will be marketed to ethical consumers, supportive labor unions, and NGOs. In addition, some NGOs will sponsor the donation of some shirts to members of selected workers’ struggles as they arise.

Because both collectives operate autonomously without access to external funding, No Chains is unfortunately unable to provide financial compensation for artists’ contributions that are adopted for use in the global “sweat-free” brand. However, artists whose work is selected will receive five shirts bearing their winning designs.

Two More Highline Arrests Ordered by NYC Parks Commissioner

ARTIST President Robert Lederman and ARTIST member Jack Nesbitt were both arrested on the Highline Sunday, 12/6/09 at approximately 12:30 PM. Lederman was previously arrested on the Highline on November 21 and issued 5 summonses for vending without a Parks permit.

In today’s arrest, the artists were handcuffed by 5 Parks Enforcement Patrol officers (PEP), taken to the 6th Precinct, held in a cell, and later released with two Criminal Court summonses given to each artist for disorderly conduct and failure to comply.

Lederman and Nesbitt are both plaintiffs in a Federal lawsuit (Lederman et al v Giuliani decided in 2001) which overturned the Parks permit requirement for artists. Since 2001 visual artists may sell in all NYC Parks without needing any license or permit.

Today’s arrest was the 43rd for Lederman. He has never been convicted and has won 5 Federal lawsuits about about street artists’ First Amendment rights.

The PEP officers were led by Inspector Robert Reeves. The arresting officers stated that the arrest was directly ordered by Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.

Lederman and Nesbitt are represented by attorney Julie Milner, who plans to file a Federal civil rights lawsuit this week about these arrests. The defendants will be the City of NY, The Parks Department and the Friends of the Highline.

Robert Lederman issued the following statement after being released:

“What the public and the media should ask the Mayor, Commissioner Benepe and the Friends of the Highline is this: If this is a public park, doesn’t the First Amendment, the Federal Court rulings and the laws of the City of NY, all of which exempt First Amendment protected street artists from any license or permit, mean that you cannot keep on falsely arresting artists for not having a park permit? And if the Friends of the Highline is advertising that they have a food vending concession up there already and plan to have more, and they also sponsor numerous art shows on the Highline, how can they legally ban First Amendment protected artists? We were arrested today as criminals, but the sad reality is that we are the ones upholding the law. It is the Mayor, the Parks Commissioner and the Friends of the Highline that are committing the only criminal act associated with these arrests. They are in blatant contempt of court.”

chashama Studio Application – Brooklyn Army Terminal

The chashama Studio Program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) encompasses 89 visual artist studios in two neighboring buildings in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

We are seeking artists to join our BAT Studio community, beginning occupancy February 2010.

chashama offers low-cost, work-only studio space to eligible individual artists for a period up to one year (depending on availability of the space from the landlord), subject to renewal. Organizations are not eligible. This program does not provide living space.

Studios:
range in size from 200 to 800 square feet,
will cost no more than $1 per square foot per month.
have 8-foot high walls, with ceiling heights that range from 12 to 15 feet.
24-hour access
freight elevators during business hours

A communal environment is encouraged through proximity of the studio artists. The studios do not have individual studio doors (if an artist wishes for privacy, he/she may hang fireproof material over the studio opening.) For an image of the building and a sample studio, check out

Artists who are awarded a studio are expected to work in their spaces on a consistent and ongoing basis, and must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it; sign-in sheets are used to record studio use. Studios may not be sublet.

Each artist provides a security deposit ($200) along with the first month’s rent upon signing the lease agreement. Studio artists are asked to participate in one (1) open house per year in which their studios are open to public visitation.

Eligibility: All applicants must be residents of the United States or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the residency, be 18 years or older, and able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be residents in another studio program at the same time as their chashama residency, unless agreed to by chashama.

Welding, work that requires use of fire, or work that creates an abundance of air-born particulate matter is not allowed. If your work samples are of this type of work, please describe how your future projects may differ.

Selection Process:
chashama will place artists in a studio based on the information received in the application.
A panel of arts professionals and artists will review applications and select artists based on
• Artistic merit. Quality of work.

We will then interview selected artists to determine
• Need. The need for space measured against other options available.
• Use. Potential for making the most of time in the studio.
• Personal responsibility. Personal references and ability to pay fees.

All applicants will be notified in February if they have been selected for interview. Please do not call our office for selection results.
