Bellyqueen performance, 3/28/2010

April 2, 2010

last sunday 3/28/2010 i designed lighting for this concert and brought my camera along, hey you never know. besides designing the lights i did the projection screen and put up the red fabric to give the show some production value. the Kraine theater is a small black box with a running show in place. we couldn’t do much focusing so all i had a chance to do was re-gel some lighting, otherwise we would have had no warmth to our show.

i also ran the lighting board during the show and took these pictures from the booth. Kaeshi Chai the artistic director of Bellyqueen had some people come in and tape the show which i haven’t seen yet. this whole production was a family affair like one of those showbiz movies from the 40’s.

yes i did mange to get some in focus pictures but i find these types more interesting.

C4FAP ‘Motion’ selection

January 29, 2010

well i’ve had one of my images selected for a c4fap Motion shows coming up this spring. i also have a cold as does mary, these things happen when we are out and about in the world.

nude female leaping upward

Ascending

i’ve made a package for the image and have downloaded the forms needing to accompany the framed print. one really should never have to read instructions and understand them when one doesn’t feel good. it’s just too much to understand nor wanting to comply with. i’d rather lay down on the couch, turn on tv and see what’s going on in soap opera world and put my head gently down on a pillow waiting for oprah to come along and lull me to sleep.

i’ve time to think about all this and since it’s 23 degrees outside i don’t need to trudge off to UPS and send the package. besides they want an artist statement. do you think they accept a note saying i’d rather take a nap?

i’ve plenty of time as the show isn’t until march 19 thru april 17 2010.

busy week as i am going over to meet the people who run the 52nd Street Project tonight and see one of their shows. the project is about helping the neighborhood kids expresses themselves using theater and since we are living in the theater district capital of the world, arrogant statement for sure but this is broadway. i think it’s nice to give back to the community who supported me and i know that one person can make a difference in another’s life.

i’ll always be grateful for Joe coming into my life, a newark policeman who read my families dynamic and offered me friendship instead of telling me what i should do. me being a teenage i wasn’t too open for advice as i knew everything but he was there with a friendly place for me to go when i needed another perspective.

i think everyone needs places like that in their lives.

so i’ll just not do too much thinking today and maybe take a nap. we can all benefit from my doggie’s suggestion on this cold winter day.

chashama Studio Application – Brooklyn Army Terminal
DEADLINE : January 12, 5pm – at our office / January 11 – postmark

The chashama Studio Program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) encompasses 89 visual artist studios in two neighboring buildings in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

We are seeking artists to join our BAT Studio community, beginning occupancy February 2010.

chashama offers low-cost, work-only studio space to eligible individual artists for a period up to one year (depending on availability of the space from the landlord), subject to renewal. Organizations are not eligible. This program does not provide living space.

Studios:
range in size from 200 to 800 square feet,
will cost no more than $1 per square foot per month.
have 8-foot high walls, with ceiling heights that range from 12 to 15 feet.
24-hour access
freight elevators during business hours

A communal environment is encouraged through proximity of the studio artists. The studios do not have individual studio doors (if an artist wishes for privacy, he/she may hang fireproof material over the studio opening.) For an image of the building and a sample studio, check out
http://www.chashama.org/_brooklyn/index.htm

Artists who are awarded a studio are expected to work in their spaces on a consistent and ongoing basis, and must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it; sign-in sheets are used to record studio use. Studios may not be sublet.

Each artist provides a security deposit ($200) along with the first month’s rent upon signing the lease agreement. Studio artists are asked to participate in one (1) open house per year in which their studios are open to public visitation.

Eligibility: All applicants must be residents of the United States or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the residency, be 18 years or older, and able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be residents in another studio program at the same time as their chashama residency, unless agreed to by chashama.

Welding, work that requires use of fire, or work that creates an abundance of air-born particulate matter is not allowed. If your work samples are of this type of work, please describe how your future projects may differ.

Selection Process:
chashama will place artists in a studio based on the information received in the application.
A panel of arts professionals and artists will review applications and select artists based on
• Artistic merit. Quality of work.

We will then interview selected artists to determine
• Need. The need for space measured against other options available.
• Use. Potential for making the most of time in the studio.
• Personal responsibility. Personal references and ability to pay fees.

All applicants will be notified in February if they have been selected for interview. Please do not call our office for selection results.

“for artists who want to know about new spaces and opportunities”

December 18, 2009

here is an organization looking for various artist performers they have the space you have the talent.

Applications accepted on an ongoing basis – but don’t delay, spaces fill up quickly!

Subject to availability, chashama is now offering a $50/week rental of a Sprint wireless broadband router (with $50 deposit).

The Windows Program is a hallmark public art initiative of chashama, enlivening vacant storefronts with multi-disciplinary performances and visual installations. The program offers art in unexpected public places, and aims to build a broader audience for contemporary art and performance.

This program has two points of entry: by curated rental or via Windows Awards, and a competitive award process. Rentals are by the week or month and are offered at affordable, subsidized rates. (currently between $250 – $1000 a week). Windows Awards offers free space, and marketing, technical and administrative support, and may include a small stipend. All Windows Program projects are chosen based upon feasibility, venue limitations, and artistic/experimental vision.

Though not a necessity, we have a preference for work that actively engages the passerby.

Note: It is recommended that you make site visits to these window spaces to see which space would be the best for your project before submitting an application.

a day in the life

October 16, 2009

wandering around new york galleries on wed after an all day sitting at soho photo looking at the lighting system they have and are thinking of replacing as they have received a proposal from the contractor who painted the gallery this past summer. what an improvement over the dingy, paint peeling walls and ceiling. for an art photography gallery to look that run down i thinks reflects on the artist who show there.

i guess i should say the photographers who show there. this distinction i make with my work being art as opposed to just photographs. i create my pictures while i think most photographers capture theirs. i’ve always thought that the proof in my work was the print, that’s where i spend most of my time in creating, not that taking the picture isn’t just important because it is.

i did stop by Madame X, 95 houston St, nyc, ny to see Catlin Mitchells semi nude fashion exhibit. Madame X seems an appropriate place for the show except for the lighting but the decor of red wall paper and golden couches, can we say whore house look, seemed to the welcome the exhibit. i did look to introduce myself to Catlin who was not hard to find in her silver sequined dress, but didn’t have time to talk, who ever does at ones opening, greeting guest, friends and what not. love her carbon prints on cold press paper.

speaking of artists and galleries in the evening i continued around the corner to ward-nasse gallery where i have four prints hanging to re-lable two of them with the awards they have received, Blue the 2009 Prix de la Photographie, Paris (PX3) and Ascending the 2009 International Photography Award. because there is an opening reception at ward-nasse this saturday 10/17/09 at 7pm for this lovely young artist who paints hearts. She usually sells out and has a large following. i sold two prints at her last show. woohoo.

the next sunday 10/18/09 mary and i are showing our work in Hoboken at the Monroe Center for the Arts for their open studio tour, 12 noon to 5 pm affair.if you’re in the neighborhood stop by or better yet make the trek to the center and say hello. we are showing some of our bump, wedding and children laboroflovepixs hoping to drum up some more business.mary makes sure there’s lots of wine and popcorn, don’t ask. she will also be bring some of her wearable art, which women seem to like, as that’s what the conversation always seems to move to at our gallery openings etc.

where does our life go? mary the energizer bunny and me, i get tired just watching her, are getting ready next month for a friends art/gallery shop opening on 231 Bedford Ave in williamsburg Brooklyn called Barking Lizard. some of the art works there are fabulous. do stop by and take a look.

Friends Without A Border upcoming auctions

September 23, 2009

we found this organization on our trip to cambodia thru another photographer’s gallery. one nite looking for a place to eat we wandered around town as we do so often in visiting cities and came across this photography gallery next door to the FCC in Siem Reap.

it was John MeDermott’s Gallery full of infrared photography which i love of Angkor Wat. we went in and i bought a small print, something we could carry. while paying for the item i told the salesperson that i was a photographer to which she replied that john liked meeting other photographers and did i have a web site. i gave her my card and off we when to dinner.

arriving back at our hotel, The River Garden, we were informed i had a call and they would call back. yes it was john, he invited us down to the gallery to meet and chat.

mary asked the question about a cambodian charity because as americans we have so much that others don’t have. that brought up Kenro Izu work and about the children’s hospital. so this is how we learned of this group.

here are two events that i am donating prints to.

Momentum Dance photography contest 2010

August 26, 2009

momentum

Welcome to Momentum: Images of Dance — the sixth annual Sanford L. Rosenberg Memorial Dance Photography Competition.

this is a dance photography contest i’ve happened to win one year against some very accomplished dance photographers, i know Howard Schatz won at least one year, so being in his league is always pretty impressive.

Do enter if this is your forte. it’s always more fun to have some great images to compete against. last year i was on some other planet so i didn’t send any prints off but this year i plan to.

join in the fun, hey you never know and they are such nice people.
