some new old work done today

sometimes i do shoots with the sole purpose of working on them later in photoshop to achieve what my vision is. this series is a work in progress with many fits and starts and today was no exception.

i had lots to do other than going to the farmers market and buying fresh vegetables but it was the time to sit here trying to make a few, well actually two images  happen. but the jury is still out on one of them while i love what happened with the other one.

so i’lll try and let you into my mind a bit and ‘show not tell’ one of the few things i learned in screen writing at ucla.

this process i learned from a very talented director i worked with on As The World Turns, Paul Lammers, adapted for sure to what i am doing now but always kept in the back of my mind. tricks sort of act that way, it has come in very useful over the years but like anything good only has limited uses.

now this image is straight from the session, notice the different quality of smoke and how it affects the photograph, while the images works on it’s own i don’t think it as powerful as the previous image.

i guess you can see that i have a thing about birth. it all comes from seeing a movie when i was young showing natural childbirth i was fascinated and i still am by the whole process, but it goes by so quickly i hardly remember seeing my own sons head pop out then body sliding into the nurses hand.

who knows really what generates our creativity. i am happy to be away from the hungry ghosts of the past and to be able to have days like today with a farm fresh vegetable salad for dinner.

Stranded: The Forbidden City is a one-night foray into a magical metropolis of imagination, hidden inside an enormous warehouse in Brooklyn.  We are seeking installations, activities, performances, and games to entertain and delight the City’s tourists.  Projects that are all of those things at once are ideal.  Volunteers of all stripes are also welcome.

As the name suggests, the theme is an exploration of cities, past, present and future, real and imagined.  Of course, the title is a double-entendre, suggesting both Beijing’s dynasty-era grandeur, and also a libertine red light district.  Artists are free to explore either or both meanings, or simply run the laundromat of their dreams.

This is the third annual Stranded event.  It started on Labor Day weekend 2008 at the Brewery warehouse in Bushwick as a gathering for those unable to attend Burning Man.  Last year the event expanded to a 26,000 square foot warehouse palace in Sunset Park, and began attracting a wider variety of artists and attendees.  This year, we are going to continue the trend with more space, art and friends and raise the bar for creative revelry to skyscraper heights.

If your project requires a stipend, please apply no later than August 6.  The final deadline is August 20.  The submission process is detailed below, after the answers to all of the questions you have. Please understand that we may not be able to accommodate all submissions.

OPEN MEETINGS & WALKTHROUGHS

We will be holding open meetings and venue walkthroughs on Thursday, July 22, Thursday, August 5 and Thursday, August 26 from 7:30pm-10pm.  These are a great place to meet people, throw around and ideas, and have a good time.  Food and drink will be served.  The meeting location is in Dumbo.

URBAN RENEWAL

Artists are invited to construct an interactive establishment that one might find in The Forbidden City.  Projects that have an activity, performance other social interaction are strongly encouraged.

Take a familiar city institution or feature, and give it a creative twist.  Examples of potential establishments include post offices, jails, bus stops, libraries, banks, train stations, DMVs, parks, laundromats, stores and boutiques, theaters and entertainment venues, voter polling station, restaurants and cafes, courthouses, spas, galleries and of course, offices.

Standalone or roving sculpture and installation is also welcome, but priority may be given to establishments as described above.

THE CITY IS A STAGE

We will have a performance venue at the party.  If you have a stage act– musical, theatrical, comical or unclassifiable, please apply and include photos, audio or other samples of your work.  There is a limited amount of stage time, so please understand that we may not be able to accommodate all performances, or feature length works.

Note that we do not accept solicitations for DJs, but if you send us mixes, we will listen to them.

THE LAW OF THE LAND

A strong D.I.Y. ethic is important. We can provide the space for your project, a crowd to enjoy it, transportation assistance and a modest stipend, but it’s ultimately up to you to get it together, make it happen and clean it up afterwards.

Establishments may be anywhere from 100 square feet to 2,000 square feet.  While we welcome sound installations, we already have a live music and dance music venue and are not seeking others.  Your project should not be likely to combust, injure or kill anyone.  In general, we do not allow projects to charge money or solicit donations.

THE FORBIDDEN CITY BANK

We can pay for the cost of approved projects. These are guaranteed to be reimbursed, even if the event is not profitable. If the event is profitable, we tip out on top of this. Consider $0 – $500 the effective range for requests. We can also provide transportation assistance.  If you need a stipend, please apply ASAP.

Each project is a unique little snowflake, and we evaluate stipends on a case-by-case basis. Small budgets are easier to accommodate than large ones. On the other hand, if you have the greatest idea we’ve ever seen and a solid track record, we may be OK with splurging.

Note that in order to qualify for reimbursements for materials, you must keep your receipts and submit them to us in a timely manner.

WHO ARE THE MAYORS OF THIS CITY?

Mark Winkel & Kevin Balktick are a pair of Brooklyn-based event producers. They met in 2005 when they became neighbors in a block-sized live/work warehouse in Dumbo. Over the course of five years, they have produced 12 feature events. In that time, their vision and following has grown from a single loft to cavernous warehouses.

Along with a dedicated community of artists, crew and volunteers, they transform mundane urban spaces into immersive fantasy environments. Their tools are larger-than-life installation art, extravagant costumes, decadent themes, surreal performances and action-packed dancefloors.

Their 2010 New Year’s Eve production, Transmutation , was held in a 30,000 square foot warehouse and was attended by 2,500 people. In February 2010, they were featured in a New York Times article about creative Brooklyn nightlife.

Art Hamptons this weekend July 9-11, 2010

The International Fine Art Fair

ArtHamptons returns as one of the highlights of the Hamptons summer season. Now in its 3rd successful year, ArtHamptons has established itself as one of the top new art fairs in America. Expect to see a mesmerizing display of post-war and contemporary art, presented by a renowned lineup of international galleries. It’s all assembled in a museum-like setting. There’s important art pieces for every budget and level of art collector. It’s all here for you, from paintings, works on paper and printed editions to photography, art glass, ceramics and sculpture.

This year ArtHamptons moves 2 blocks west to Sayre Park’s 5 bucolic acres. The site is located between Bridgehampton Commons and the Hamptons Classic field, just 1 block north of Montauk Highway on Snake Hollow Rd.

a very interesting Gallery out there this year is the Emmanuel Fremin Gallery who has invited us the the opening preview party benefiting Longhouse Reserve.

Elisa Cooper of Elisa Contemporary Art also sent us an invitation to see some of her artist at Art Hamptons and a free pass to see the show. we first met her at Red Dot Art fair this year, she has some very interesting artist.

Suzan Woodruff

Suzan Woodruff, a fourth generation native of the American West was born in Phoenix, Arizona where, from an early age, she was imbued with her love and awe of nature.

swLittleGreenPearlIIIShe is considered one of the co-leaders of the “Flow Movement” in Los Angeles. Suzan’s abstract expressionist paintings are deeply informed by the forces of nature and physics and appear to draw inspiration from patterns found in natural phenomena observed from life.

Using thinned acrylic pigments, and a specially designed table, Suzan’s paintings form rills, deltas, waves and eddies. They appear as voluptuous, sensual landscapes, cloudscapes, seascapes, dunescapes and all sorts of natural spaces – even bodyscapes. Her elegant fields of flowing color blend Zen serenity and human passion.

Suzan’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. She was recently featured in a two-person exhibit of Flow Painting at the Art Factory in Budapest, Hungary.

Wayne Zebzda

Wayne was born in Hartford Connecticut and started his journey out west attending the San Francisco Art Institute on a full scholarship as a painting major. With day jobs in construction, he also developed a facility with tools of a different trade, and eventually shifted to producing sculptural and installation works, as well as his carbon smoke drawings.

Wayne’s work communicates a deep sense of delight in the face of the absurdities of life and he loves to create art from the everyday objects we encounter (including the Cross Walk Man sign).

According to Wayne, the process for his Carbon Smoke drawings is as follows:
“I have to move continuously while the smoke pours out of the torch. If you have ever seen the film footage of Jackson Pollack painting it is a similar continuous movement, his with drips, mine with smoke and the added possibility of catching the drawing on fire. I enjoy the immediacy and physicality of drawing. The welding torch has the pressure turned down low which makes it sooty/smoky. Working back into the drawings with erasures and brushes reveals what’s underneath and a clear fixative sets the soot in place (hopefully) and yes, I have burned the paper and will again.”

Wayne currently lives and works on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai.

Wayne is committed to making art accessible to a wide audience, and has been involved in numerous Art in Public Places projects and commissions for the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture in the Arts. His work has been exhibit and collected throughout the US including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and in Hawaii.

if this isn’t enough activity for a weekend we have added one more event and are off visiting another photographer friend on the north shore to have dinner and relax looking at the sunsets maybe even clicking a few shutters along the way over the sounds of passing seagulls who aren’t drenched in oil yet.

what we do to this world and ourselves seems criminal to me. oh well, maybe next time we’ll get it right.

CITROËN LAUNCHES PRESTIGIOUS DS3 DESIGN COMPETITION

Calling all designers! Ever wanted to get your work in front of senior figures from GQ or Louis Vuitton?

Citroën has launched a high profile international design competition, inviting creative visionaries to customize the roof and dashboard of DS3. In addition to a cash prize, the winning project will be presented at Citroën’s international showcase on the Champs Elysees, the C_42, in October 2010 to mark the start of the Paris Motor Show. As an ultimate reward, the design will also be put into production, available in 2011 as part of a special DS3 collection.

Designs can be submitted up until the competition’s closing date of July 4th 2010. The entries will be judged by a prestigious panel of experts from the worlds of design, art and media including senior representatives from GQ, the Cartier Foundation and Louis Vuitton. From budding designers to the experienced, the competition is open to anyone wanting to offer their own unique interpretation of DS3’s roof and dashboard.

A series of video ‘briefs’ will be available on the competition’s website – www.citroencreativeawards.com – inviting entrants to bring surprising and refreshing design proposals. ‘Daring’ and ‘professionalism’ are the watchwords of a jury that wants to be astonished by the creativity of candidates.

i am dancing as fast as i can

but don’t seem to be catching up. computer problems along with operator error, me. for some reason i decided to change cs4 photoshop to run using Rosetta on my 2.93 mac pro tower. bad mistake as rosetta is buggy and crashes a lot.

i had to search abobe forums for this answer the only way to fix it is to delete the file in user>libary> preferences folder >called com.adobe.photoshop.plist then clear all caches & reboot. i used onyx for that but agin check off something i should have so i only caused more problems.

after reboot then go to photoshop not the folder but the application, my first mistake,and click on >file info. then one can uncheck run using Rosetta and solve all you cs4 photoshop problems.

sometimes well most of the times i have a little bit of knowledge i get into big trouble. it took me day to fix this problem, staying up until 3:30 am last night working on it. did the last step this morning by running disk warrior to rebuild my directories. i used apple disk utility to reset permissions before running disk warrior.

i also use defrag to clean  unused space on my hard drives.

so i think i am up and running now. all of these programs are a part of my arsenal to keep my computer running. i am no propeller head but over the years had to learn how to keep things running.  i hope some of this information is helpful.

Boobquake

when i first heard the news report of the Iranian cleric blaming scantily clad  woman  boobs of causing earthquakes i chuckled thinking that yes some of them have had a profound effect on me, sometimes my hands shook as i touched them or thought about touching them, but never the ground underneath me.

i remember my first earthquake happening when i, naked except for being covered with soap in the shower,  had to think fast as the ground beneath my bathtub began to shake and  remembering earthquake preparedness lessons as i grabbed a towel and stood in the bathroom doorway. after the first shock wave we, the family and i, ran out of the house into the drive way along with all our other neighbors. i still felt kind of silly in my towel.

earthquakes are pretty scary things but i’ve never felt that way looking eye to eye with a boob. but Ms. Jen McCreight, an American twentysomething student thought she’d do something to support science and make t shirts for Boobquake day.

yes virgina there is a boobquake facebook page showing ms mc creight in her earthquake outfit.

this though is not ms. mc creight but a lovely woman in the prime of her life. humans are beautiful i think it’s a crime to cover beauty with ignorance.

Christie’s New York announces the Prints & Multiples Sale

mary and i took a stroll  this sunday went over to christie’s to see some very fine prints. christie’s is one of the excellent free perks new york has to offer.all the usual big names with three small prints from an artist we discovered in Pistola , Italy, his birthplace, Marino Marini who’s a sculptor and print maker, one of his main themes are horses.

we did see something unusual in the handling of prints as a sale associate was showing a print to a perspective customer. the sales associate nor the customer wore the usual white gloves, they didn’t actually touch the printed surface but did feel the paper the print was on under the matt. odd because i’ve always thought that any human oils weren’t good for papers.

oh well the exhibit was pretty cool.

NEW YORK, NY.- Christie’s New York announces the Prints & Multiples Sale on April 26 and 27. The auction features 482 lots including an impressive variety of American, Modern, Post-War, and Contemporary prints estimated in the region of $7 million. Highlights in the sale include works by Edvard Munch, as well as Works from the Collection of Michael Crichton — best-selling author, screenwriter, film director and producer — and Pop Art prints by artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Roy Lichtenstein.

The Print Department will offer Works from the Collection of Michael Crichton. Crichton was renowned for his riveting scientific thrillers such as The Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park, Timeline, The Lost World, Rising Sun, and State of Fear, as well as the dramatic television series ER. This rich collection of Post-War prints will be spread over three sales including the Prints & Multiples Sale on April 26-27, the Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Sale on May 11, and the Post-War & Contemporary Art Day Sale on May 12. The Prints & Multiples Sale will contain a selection of fourteen prints from the collection. Among the works to be offered are two prints by Jasper Johns, Two Flags (Whitney Anniversary) (ULAE 207) (estimate: $20,000-30,000) and Light Bulb (ULAE 170) (estimate: $5,000-7,000).

Leading the sale are three rare and distinguished prints by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The works Der Kuss (estimate: $150,000-250,000), Madonna (estimate: $350,000-500,000), and Das kranke Kind I (estimate: $100,000-150,000) are each intimate and emotionally charged images. The intertwining nude bodies in Munch’s Der Kuss create a physical and psychological tension, as the viewer becomes a voyeur peering in on the lovers’ intimate embrace. First shown in Oslo in 1895, Der Kuss was considered so provocative that officials decreed it immoral and prohibited it from exhibition. An equally evocative image, Madonna is often assigned an eroticized interpretation. The dark background of the Madonna frames and isolates the nude torso in the center of the composition, emphasizing the significance of her sexuality. In contrast to the swirling blackness behind the figure, the relaxed face of the Madonna creates a sense of peacefulness and calm. One of Munch’s most acclaimed subjects, it is a work for a true connoisseur.

Pop Art Prints
A robust selection of Pop Art works are offered in the Prints & Multiples Sale including works by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein and Tom Wesselmann Nude with Yellow Pillow (estimate: $100,000-150,000), a later work by Lichtenstein, is a homage to his own oeuvre. Toward the end of his life the artist reflected on his own career and art historical legacy through new experimentation in his work, creating works that were self-referential. The figure in the print references art historical nudes while also suggesting that Lichtenstein believes himself to be a part of that tradition. And yet the confrontational gaze of the women rendered in a Pop style also marks his break from that convention, a suggestion of how the artist would like to be remembered.

American Prints: George Wesley Bellows
A selection of American prints, including eight works by George Wesley Bellows, also highlight the sale. Bellows was a member of the Ashcan School and was famous for depicting images of class struggle. Splinter Beach (estimate: $6,000-8,000) and Tennis (Tennis Tournament) (estimate: $4,000-6,000) are both scenes indicating the rise of social mobility in the United States. In these prints members of the middle class are taking part in leisurely pastimes, spending a day at the beach and watching a tennis match. Before the turn of the century, leisure activities were only enjoyed by high society; Bellows shows that times were changing. His images have a rigorous quality which reflects the tumultuous nature of the class struggle. This extensive selection of lithographs provides iconic examples of Bellows’ unique style.

todays experiment

well after having a bad family portrait day the other weekend i tried to arrange a session with another flaky no-show model, who didn’t show, due to illness and doctors advice, she didn’t know she was sick with a fever. where do they come from?

i had set up some strobes in my studio in anticipation for her session but shadow my only other model  doesn’t like to have her picture taken. but my honey came into the city to go to Photo Salon last night and volunteered to sit for me. i shot two cards and showed her how to use the Sekonic 508  light meter. i think we got some nice shots from the session.

this one below is a favorite from the first of the session. i don’t think anyone of us, i know i don’t have, the model feel, if there is such a thing.  it’s a pretty special talent to go through actions that emote a special feeling,  unless you’re part of and aware of the moment it’s pretty hard to appreciate but the picture says everything.

C4FAP ‘Motion’ selection

well i’ve had one of my images selected for a c4fap Motion shows coming up this spring. i also have a cold as does mary, these things happen when we are out and about in the world.

i’ve made a package for the image and have downloaded the forms needing to accompany the framed print. one really should never have to read instructions and understand them when one doesn’t feel good. it’s just too much to understand nor wanting to comply with. i’d rather lay down on the couch, turn on tv and see what’s going on in soap opera world and put my head gently down on a pillow waiting for oprah to come along and lull me to sleep.

i’ve time to think about all this and since it’s 23 degrees outside i don’t need to trudge off to UPS and send the package. besides they want an artist statement. do you think they accept a note saying i’d rather take a nap?

i’ve plenty of time as the show isn’t until march 19 thru april 17 2010.

busy week as i am going over to meet the people who run the 52nd Street Project tonight and see one of their shows. the project is about helping the neighborhood kids expresses themselves using theater and since we are living in the theater district capital of the world, arrogant statement for sure but this is broadway. i think it’s nice to give back to the community who supported me and i know that one person can make a difference in another’s life.

i’ll always be grateful for Joe coming into my life, a newark policeman who read my families dynamic and offered me friendship instead of telling me what i should do. me being a teenage i wasn’t too open for advice as i knew everything but he was there with a friendly place for me to go when i needed another perspective.

i think everyone needs places like that in their lives.
