visiting Sarah Small’s ‘Tableau Vivant’ of the delirium constructions

May 25, 2011

monday night, may 23, i had the opportunity to volunteer on sarah’s new show out at Skylight One at the Williamsburg bank building in Brooklyn on her new production. sarah’s productions are  growing larger each time she does one. the last time she did one of these it was in powerhouse books in DUMBO. now she’s into a much larger venue with a larger cast and impressive performance.

Williamsburg Bank Building

i’ve know of her work for some time and have contacted her before about working on any upcoming project together, which never came about as she has her vision and i’ve mine. see her work at http://livingpictureprojects.com/ and mine at www.jeneyoutt.com we’re much different but we both work with nude & clothed bodies so we’ve a similar premise.

as her web site says “for the first time, this May, Small will be exploring, within the Tableau Vivant, a specific social phenomenon: the ritual of marriage. With its airs of pageantry and religious rectitude, wedding ceremonies celebrate the most intimate joining of two individuals in the most public manner, providing rich fodder for examination within the project’s framework. While the process is still developing, Small will act as the legal officiant for two couples as she simultaneously directs the attendant Tableau Vivant cast in their own explorations of the theme, mingling performance art with reality in a compelling cocktail.”

my work is more about how we hide what we reveal but covering ourselves up. i am also interested in a personal quest of self discovery which i began years ago having what would be categorized as a religious experience but at the time i had no idea what had happened during a aikido meditative moment. it’s been a long journey with many delightful discoveries, but as the saying goes, self discovery isn’t always good news.

well that’s the big Tableau picture and there were many photographers wandering around cameras clicking and zooming shooting videos and pictures, what i usually do is to take in the whole scene then see what interests me. after all this isn’t a commercial job or wedding more like fun, that’s it FUN that’s why i do photography for the fun of creating it. i’ve worked since i was 14 years old now it’s time to have more fun in life.

she is shooting with a canon camera through a L series lens which i also own. so what could i add to this scene? here we are in a beautiful classic bank building………….. look around you what do you see?

this reminds me of the Byzantine Cathedral in St Marks Square in Venice Italy, talk about cool. i can imagine the immigrant family walking into this bank depositing their hard earned pennies and being impressed, who wouldn’t? where is the america and americans who built buildings like these. now banks are just plain hollow walls with automatic tellers and cameras. empty spaces to be filled with the next dry cleaner tenant, what have we wrought on ourselves america?

life is about looking around especially in photography. there is a photographic exercise where one is confined to a 10′ square area having to find photographic subject matter. well here we are

so you can see i was pretty busy during rehearsals discovering things, someone had draped the front doors to prevent people from couldn’t seeing the naked people inside who were there to be seen as part of this evening performance, yea i know. but this was exactly my kind of picture.

now i figured everything was covered and i might as well find something constructive to do to help out and earn my keep. i found two young ladies stuffing programs and helped them fold & assemble the programs, then i helped bring ice in for the bar and generally hung around being helpful. but here is what you’ve all waited so patiently for. i retired to the balcony over the front entrance for my view of the beginning

i really just watched and listened, after all if my eyes are looking through a view finder they really aren’t seeing and experiencing the whole performance. i loved the music by meredith monk and the voices of the awakened tableau. yes i tried out the video portion of my camera and found other limitations of it. one can’t pan, zoom & focus at the same time without growing another hand. but who needs sharp images when making a video?

the history of digital cameras & other mind wanderings

January 4, 2011

The history of digital cameras

Thirty-five years ago—in December 1975—an engineer named Steven Sasson snapped a photo with the world’s first fully digital camera at a Kodak lab. It took 23 seconds to record a 100-by-100-pixel image to cassette tape. Not until the early 1990s, however, did digital photo technology take off, launching an attack that would conquer the consumer camera industry in less than a decade. In the slides ahead, let’s examine some highlights of digital camera history.

1st digital camera

if this interests you then you might want to go to Wikipedia’s ‘history of the camera’ web page for some pretty cool cameras and history. the article shows my first camera, the Kodak No 2 Brownie, actually it was my families camera that i decided to use on my own, always an interesting experience seeing grown ups reaction to what kids do.

but the article misses my first real camera purchase during my stay in Munich with the US Army. i couldn’t afford a Lieca so i got an Exakta made in the USSR Germany. it had a 1.8 zena lens on it, whoooo.

exackta IIa

i loved that camera and kept it for years. when i lived in Greenwich village i found a sign in Cambridge camera that said ‘We fix Exakta’s.’ that’s where i first met Norm who took care of my baby for years until it couldn’t be repaired anymore because of the film advance gears being stripped beyond repair.

he swapped it for a Canon AE1 and lenses. i went on to purchase an F1 and an AE1 programmable but now i had to get use to a right hand film advance. this was a turning point in my photography but i didn’t know enough then to realize what was going on, sometimes i wake up in the morning wondering what i know now as i stumble to the MR Coffee pot.

this morning, writing in my journal, about what to do this year i looked up at 8 shoe boxes of film i could begin scanning into computer and a shutter goes through my body. oh how i dread scanning film and slides into computer. but i know i’ve some lovely stuff in the boxes and in the chrome archive books. but the though crosses my mind maybe i’ll call the dentist and see about some root canal work instead.

i look on my book shelf and pull out my Exakta camera 1933-1978  book by Clement Aguila & Michel Rouah from years ago and flip through the pages looking for my IIa and Zena lenses. i love German lenses. that’s why i’ve a Contax Nx and a Hasselblad 503 but i have kept my Canon F1 just to shoot infrared film as the Nx is an film auto loader which won’t allow infrared film to be used it confuses the auto reader in the camera. it was a shame that Kyocera discontinued their Contax N Digital so soon after developing it. i was heart broken.

i guess i could buy on of those N mount adapters and put my Zeiss lenses on my 5D MII and see what happens. would it improve my photos? well since no one is buying them right now why bother?

some roman church statue

this is taken with a Canon 20D, so it’s not so much the camera that makes the picture more about time & place and vision.

the chore on hand right now for me is to gather my Diablo rojos notes, which i did yesterday and separate them in to categories. i also found on amazon a dvd video about them which i ordered. today i’ll do more research, which is right next to film scanning on the list, but discovery can be exciting. after all we need to put down a date for our next Panama trip, find housing and schedule interviews.

as always, i am waiting to hear back from people today. things could be worst with the boiler not working or no hot water, all the comforts of new york city living.

Panama City, panama, los diablos rojos reflections

September 23, 2010

today it’s been two weeks since i returned from panama city, where did the time go? here it is thursday and two nights ago i just finally burned the cards to dvds and today i researched the los diablos rojos. now if your looking to put yourself to sleep on siesta i suggest you research the web for information. now the world wide web is an excellent source of information  which can be overwhelming.

then as usual being alone in front of a computer screen with no other distractions, like walking a doggie, there comes pangs of hunger as the sun passes my window leaving me in a darkened room.oh i recognize that feeling gnawing at me…. hunger. so i make dinner and not do what i had on my days agenda for today. which is to write my blog.

look at that dusty book shelf it needs cleaning so on my way to make my salad i give it a wipe and notice another shelf, well they must all be dusty. yes you guessed it, i’ve got pretty clean shelves and nothing entered on the blog. now i’ve had dinner and the chocolate truffles in the fridge are talking to me, eat me.

but slowly, very slowly i am moving forward with errant fingers and keystrokes. i know what i need………. music so i look thought the cds and i don’t have any real spanish music but i do have some tapes. well anything to help me concentrate on the task at hand so i pick Los Flamers su  historica muscal and some Tito Puente. i know not panamian at all but desperate times call for desperate measures.

now that the truffles are sort of drowned out for a time…. altho i can hear them during pauses in the music. i now have the proper setting to remember panama city although i am missing the smell of diesel fumes, i’d rather have chocolate myself but i won’t get up again and get distracted.

so i land at Tocumen International via Continental Airlines at 9:38pm and go to turista desk to ask about the cost of a taxi into the city $28.00 bucks. gone up since four years ago by $12.00 an dreading my lonely planet book. hotel marabella which nobody understands so i pull out the brochure i got the last time there, wisened traveler i am and off we go, but first a stop by the turista polica to see where i am from. Nueva York and off we go in my white turista taxi. regular taxis are yellow now , wonder where they got that idea from? but traveling through the night as lights pass by and dark shapes in the background wizz us towards Plaza Concordia and the marabella, which isn’t on the plaza but a seedy street behind. we found this hotel from a travel agent who recommended it us as an inexpensive alternate panama city hotel when we stayed in bocas de toro four years ago at the la veranda.

calle 55, panama city panama

no this isn’t where i stayed but around the corner. on the right side of picture is where i ate a few meals. arriving that late at night i was hungry so i knew about the place and headed there to get something to tide me over until morning. mixed fruit salad, pineapple, banana, papaya….. how i’d forgotten what fresh fruit tasted like.$2.66

manolo's

where the elite meet. but i really couldn’t wait being so excited  until i when down to the plaza concordia to see los diablos rojos. after all that’s why i spent money i couldn’t really afford but then again i couldn’t pass up an invitation like this. how many times are we asked to dance before the offers stop?

los diablos rojos panama city panama

los diablos rojos panama city panama

there she is…….my grey whale…….. only different…… waiting for passengers . now i could go to bed a get some sleep so i could begin this great adventure. as i laid my head down on my pillow i already missed mary but it would only be a week away from her, but a week can be a long time, we had scheduled our vow ceremony nine days later from my return and so much more left to do. was this crazy….maybe but so life can be at times.

the next morning before picking up the hertz car, good idea to be here early sunday morning at Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Church of our Lady of Mount Caramel) as the people arrived for mass, i didn’t think it was right to go inside and take pictures then. i wandered around getting the lay of the land

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Church of our Lady of Mount Caramel)

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Church of our Lady of Mount Caramel)

This  church  is the only Gothic architectural style building in the country. This structure was built by the congregation of the Carmelites which have been in Panama since 1940.

but here is my quest, at least my first attempt to tell a story about these creatures and my associations with them.

los diablos rojos, panama city, panama

los diablos rojos, panama city, panama

but my distractions are many, did i mention chocolate truffles? oh and the mercury  xr7 comes out of the body shop tomorrow so i can put it back together, i guess in my spare time.

our own diablos rojo. well i’ll say good night now, i’ve got a date with a truffle,

writing LMCC proposal or wasting time looking for something found

March 23, 2010

today i am trying to finish up a Lower Manhattan Culture Council application for a workspace. this is my first time application for anything of this kind. seems collage people take classes in this or are born with these qualities. for me it’s a big push, not in doing my artistic work,  just writing about it. glad i took those creative writing courses at the new school. i am sort of stymied at doing a resume, i don’t want a job, i’ve had too many of those. all i want out of this is a clean space to work.

so i needed to put together a cd of images and all the ones i selected are a few years old, lets dig through a HD and see what i can find, it’s always interesting.

indian female dancer

Parul Shah Dancer

these images are part of a commission work for the Parul Shah Dance company advertisement but are my outtakes. originally they had me shooting in a dance rehearsal studio way too small and ugly background, but ‘all we need are the images and we’ll photoshop the background out.’  OK

Parul Shah Dancers

but i think listening to me and doing these images in a more controled enviroment is better for the images, but hey what do i know

Parul Shah Dancers

these images are from  reshoot in my studio because my camera canon 20d at the time stopped working. it does that every once in a while oh well. so we did these the next day. but i can’t remember if they were happy with the other images or what but i got a couple for me.

odd that some people come through my life briefly and i never hear from them again while others keep in touch, life is that way.

Canon 5D Mll Firmware update to update

March 23, 2010

Dear Jene,

Thank you for using Canon products.

We apologize sincerely for the inconvenience caused to our customers by suspending the availability of the Version 2.0.3 firmware.

We are now introducing the Version 2.0.4 firmware. This firmware corrects the malfunction that occurred in the previous Version 2.0.3 firmware, in which the manual recording level changed and made recording impossible.

Customers who have the Version 2.0.3 firmware on their cameras should update the firmware to Version 2.0.4.

Functional Enhancements
In the Version 2.0.4 firmware, the following phenomena that occurred with the Version 2.0.3 firmware (which was to enhance the movie functions) have been corrected.

  • There was a phenomenon in which the manual recording settings made in C1/C2/C3 were changed and sound could not be recorded if manual sound recording was used in the C1/C2/C3 settings and the camera was subsequently turned off (or if Auto Power Off was activated). This does not occur in modes other than C1/C2/C3.

The Version 2.0.4 firmware includes the movie function enhancements listed in items 1 through 5 below, and also incorporates the correction listed in item 6.

      • 1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
      • 1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
      • 640×480 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)

      • 1920×1080 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
      • 1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
      • 640×480 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
    • NTSC:
    • PAL:
  1. Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.
  2. Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64 levels).
  3. Adds a histogram display (brightness or RGB) for shooting movies in manual exposure.
  4. Adds shutter-priority AE mode (Tv) and aperture-priority AE (Av) mode to the exposure modes for shooting movies.
  5. Changes the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz.
  6. Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)

Affected Product
EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR

Firmware
Firmware update Version 2.0.4 is now available for download from the following URL: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos5dm2/firmware.html

Notes
Firmware Version 2.0.4 is for EOS 5D Mark II cameras with firmware up to Version 2.0.3. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 2.0.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Movies captured using EOS 5D Mark II cameras with Firmware Version 1.1.0 to 1.2.4 can be played back on cameras updated with Firmware Version 2.0.4. However, if you try to play back movies captured with a camera with the new firmware on a camera with a previous firmware version, the message “Cannot play back image” appears on the camera’s LCD monitor.

It is recommended that you use the latest Canon applications1 to edit movies captured with EOS 5D Mark II cameras that have the latest firmware because some previous versions do not support movie-editing functions and the frame rates that are added or changed by the latest firmware. You can download the latest Canon applications from our Web site.

1 ZoomBrowser EX Version 6.5.0 or later (compatible operating systems: Windows XP/Vista/7)
ImageBrowser Version 6.5.0 or later (compatible operating systems: Mac OS X v10.4/10.5/10.6)

In addition to the enhancements to the movie function, the accompanying instruction manual has also been revised. Users are asked to download both the latest firmware and the latest instruction manual.

(When updating the firmware of your camera, please first read the instructions thoroughly before you download the firmware.)

Canon firmware update correction-standby for update to update

Canon 5D Mark II Firmware Update = 24p (UPDATED)

03.17.10 @ 12:00PM Tags : ,

This went live Monday, but unless you shot something yesterday, it shouldn’t matter that I’m a couple days late with this. Yes, the Canon 5d Mark II, a wonderful camera previously limited to shooting 30p video with automatic, terrible-sounding audio, is now many, many times more valuable thanks to a free firmware update live on Canon’s site. Kind of a big deal:

  1. Adds 24p and 25p.

UPDATE FROM CANON: Recently we have discovered a malfunction that occurs with Firmware Version 2.0.3, in which the manual recording levels for C1/C2/C3 are changed and the camera becomes unable to record audio if the power is turned off (or if Auto power off takes effect) after registering “Sound Recording: Manual” in the camera user settings.

We apologize very sincerely for the inconvenience, but we are going to stop making this firmware available for download. For customers who have already updated to the new firmware, when using the camera with the mode dial set to C1/C2/C3, please either set the sound recording settings to Auto.

We are currently preparing firmware that will correct this malfunction. As soon as those preparations have been completed, we will let you know on this Web site. In the meantime, we apologize for the inconvenience this represents, but please wait until the fixed firmware is ready.

Thanks noschool.com.

Wouldn’t you think canon would have a 5D Mll hanging around the tech support department to test firmware on before they release it? duh

Long awaited 5D firmware update

March 16, 2010

well here it is at least a link to the canon web site with a download button and instructions for loading it into your camera. it first time i tried to do a firmware update on my 20D i just couldn’t get it. sometimes when i read something i just don’t understand what i read, but following these instructions step by step is pretty easy.

this page also tells you what the features are in the software for recording video and sound. looks like they have listened to some of the comments on the cinema 5d web site.

if i can do it so should other people.

letter reply from Canon CEO & President Mr. Adachi, 5D MK II

February 23, 2010

Your recent letter to Mr. Adachi has been forwarded to my attention for reply. I sincerely appreciate your concerns and would like to apologize for any misunderstanding you may have encountered during your visit at the 2009 Photo Expo.

The EOS 5D MK II is the first and foremost a still image camera, and offers the ability to make high quality video clips. Unfortunately, HDMI output at 1920 X 1080 is not possible as the camera is not capable of handling the massive amounts of data written to the card, and output an HD signal via the HDMI port at the same time. This is why Live View is limited to 640 X 480 resolution.

The firmware update you are referred to in your letter, is intended to be released sometime during the first half of 2010. There was no release scheduled for January. When the update is released, we will see what frame rates the firmware offers.

As for the other features you mentioned as being absent from the EOS 5D MK II, they may be considered for a future product.

I hope this information is helpful to you and once again appreciate your interest in Canon.

Letter to canon camera CEO about 5D Mll

February 15, 2010

i wish the community would join me in a letter writing campaign to the president & ceo of canon directly asking for the long awaited updated software for the 5D Mll.

i find it somewhat of a disgrace and affront to me the user that canon has taken so long to upgrade this camera’s software while introducing more new cheaper eos cameras  with better software.

calling  an anonymous  telephone line and speaking to representative isn’t as effective as a direct letter to the president. one needs to consider the cultural   implications of shame to the company for not doing anything to fix this oversight.

i don’t think improvements move up the ladder of command but rather down the chain of corporate communities.

if we want this software changed then we need to speak up often and many times in order to be heard over the din of doing nothing. squeaky wheels get greased, let us fill their ears with noise.

see below the presidents message to the world who canon is. do you think this is the same lethargic company  sitting on an updated software version for our cameras?

then do something. please take a moment out of your day to write to them stating your displeasure.
