the history of digital cameras & other mind wanderings

The history of digital cameras

Thirty-five years ago—in December 1975—an engineer named Steven Sasson snapped a photo with the world’s first fully digital camera at a Kodak lab. It took 23 seconds to record a 100-by-100-pixel image to cassette tape. Not until the early 1990s, however, did digital photo technology take off, launching an attack that would conquer the consumer camera industry in less than a decade. In the slides ahead, let’s examine some highlights of digital camera history.

1st digital camera

if this interests you then you might want to go to Wikipedia’s ‘history of the camera’ web page for some pretty cool cameras and history. the article shows my first camera, the Kodak No 2 Brownie, actually it was my families camera that i decided to use on my own, always an interesting experience seeing grown ups reaction to what kids do.

but the article misses my first real camera purchase during my stay in Munich with the US Army. i couldn’t afford a Lieca so i got an Exakta made in the USSR Germany. it had a 1.8 zena lens on it, whoooo.

exackta IIa

i loved that camera and kept it for years. when i lived in Greenwich village i found a sign in Cambridge camera that said ‘We fix Exakta’s.’ that’s where i first met Norm who took care of my baby for years until it couldn’t be repaired anymore because of the film advance gears being stripped beyond repair.

he swapped it for a Canon AE1 and lenses. i went on to purchase an F1 and an AE1 programmable but now i had to get use to a right hand film advance. this was a turning point in my photography but i didn’t know enough then to realize what was going on, sometimes i wake up in the morning wondering what i know now as i stumble to the MR Coffee pot.

this morning, writing in my journal, about what to do this year i looked up at 8 shoe boxes of film i could begin scanning into computer and a shutter goes through my body. oh how i dread scanning film and slides into computer. but i know i’ve some lovely stuff in the boxes and in the chrome archive books. but the though crosses my mind maybe i’ll call the dentist and see about some root canal work instead.

i look on my book shelf and pull out my Exakta camera 1933-1978  book by Clement Aguila & Michel Rouah from years ago and flip through the pages looking for my IIa and Zena lenses. i love German lenses. that’s why i’ve a Contax Nx and a Hasselblad 503 but i have kept my Canon F1 just to shoot infrared film as the Nx is an film auto loader which won’t allow infrared film to be used it confuses the auto reader in the camera. it was a shame that Kyocera discontinued their Contax N Digital so soon after developing it. i was heart broken.

i guess i could buy on of those N mount adapters and put my Zeiss lenses on my 5D MII and see what happens. would it improve my photos? well since no one is buying them right now why bother?

some roman church statue

this is taken with a Canon 20D, so it’s not so much the camera that makes the picture more about time & place and vision.

the chore on hand right now for me is to gather my Diablo rojos notes, which i did yesterday and separate them in to categories. i also found on amazon a dvd video about them which i ordered. today i’ll do more research, which is right next to film scanning on the list, but discovery can be exciting. after all we need to put down a date for our next Panama trip, find housing and schedule interviews.

as always, i am waiting to hear back from people today. things could be worst with the boiler not working or no hot water, all the comforts of new york city living.

some of the great companies i know

October 13, 2010

the other day i was shooting a maternity shoot, well actually mary was because i was feeling under the weather but i set up the lighting and she shot. i noticed one of my white lightning 1200 ultras light had the wrong lock down handle.

it had a lsa10 type handle which doesn’t really work tighting soft boxes down. i needed a umba handle so after the shot i called white lightning figuring i had to order another handle. well after they figured out what i needed they said they would send me one. FREE

not only did they send one i received two. now how many companies do you know and buy things from provide service like this? ever think canon would do something like this? good luck if you do, i’ve a slightly used bridge i’d like to sell you.

writing LMCC proposal or wasting time looking for something found

March 23, 2010

today i am trying to finish up a Lower Manhattan Culture Council application for a workspace. this is my first time application for anything of this kind. seems collage people take classes in this or are born with these qualities. for me it’s a big push, not in doing my artistic work,  just writing about it. glad i took those creative writing courses at the new school. i am sort of stymied at doing a resume, i don’t want a job, i’ve had too many of those. all i want out of this is a clean space to work.

so i needed to put together a cd of images and all the ones i selected are a few years old, lets dig through a HD and see what i can find, it’s always interesting.

indian female dancer

Parul Shah Dancer

these images are part of a commission work for the Parul Shah Dance company advertisement but are my outtakes. originally they had me shooting in a dance rehearsal studio way too small and ugly background, but ‘all we need are the images and we’ll photoshop the background out.’  OK

Parul Shah Dancers

but i think listening to me and doing these images in a more controled enviroment is better for the images, but hey what do i know

Parul Shah Dancers

these images are from  reshoot in my studio because my camera canon 20d at the time stopped working. it does that every once in a while oh well. so we did these the next day. but i can’t remember if they were happy with the other images or what but i got a couple for me.

odd that some people come through my life briefly and i never hear from them again while others keep in touch, life is that way.

Canon 5D Mll Firmware update to update

March 23, 2010

Dear Jene,

Thank you for using Canon products.

We apologize sincerely for the inconvenience caused to our customers by suspending the availability of the Version 2.0.3 firmware.

We are now introducing the Version 2.0.4 firmware. This firmware corrects the malfunction that occurred in the previous Version 2.0.3 firmware, in which the manual recording level changed and made recording impossible.

Customers who have the Version 2.0.3 firmware on their cameras should update the firmware to Version 2.0.4.

Functional Enhancements
In the Version 2.0.4 firmware, the following phenomena that occurred with the Version 2.0.3 firmware (which was to enhance the movie functions) have been corrected.

  • There was a phenomenon in which the manual recording settings made in C1/C2/C3 were changed and sound could not be recorded if manual sound recording was used in the C1/C2/C3 settings and the camera was subsequently turned off (or if Auto Power Off was activated). This does not occur in modes other than C1/C2/C3.

The Version 2.0.4 firmware includes the movie function enhancements listed in items 1 through 5 below, and also incorporates the correction listed in item 6.

      • 1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
      • 1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
      • 640×480 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)

      • 1920×1080 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
      • 1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
      • 640×480 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
    • NTSC:
    • PAL:
  1. Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.
  2. Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64 levels).
  3. Adds a histogram display (brightness or RGB) for shooting movies in manual exposure.
  4. Adds shutter-priority AE mode (Tv) and aperture-priority AE (Av) mode to the exposure modes for shooting movies.
  5. Changes the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz.
  6. Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)

Affected Product
EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR

Firmware
Firmware update Version 2.0.4 is now available for download from the following URL: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos5dm2/firmware.html

Notes
Firmware Version 2.0.4 is for EOS 5D Mark II cameras with firmware up to Version 2.0.3. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 2.0.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Movies captured using EOS 5D Mark II cameras with Firmware Version 1.1.0 to 1.2.4 can be played back on cameras updated with Firmware Version 2.0.4. However, if you try to play back movies captured with a camera with the new firmware on a camera with a previous firmware version, the message “Cannot play back image” appears on the camera’s LCD monitor.

It is recommended that you use the latest Canon applications1 to edit movies captured with EOS 5D Mark II cameras that have the latest firmware because some previous versions do not support movie-editing functions and the frame rates that are added or changed by the latest firmware. You can download the latest Canon applications from our Web site.

1 ZoomBrowser EX Version 6.5.0 or later (compatible operating systems: Windows XP/Vista/7)
ImageBrowser Version 6.5.0 or later (compatible operating systems: Mac OS X v10.4/10.5/10.6)

In addition to the enhancements to the movie function, the accompanying instruction manual has also been revised. Users are asked to download both the latest firmware and the latest instruction manual.

(When updating the firmware of your camera, please first read the instructions thoroughly before you download the firmware.)

Canon 5D Mark II Firmware Update = 24p (UPDATED)

03.17.10 @ 12:00PM Tags : ,

This went live Monday, but unless you shot something yesterday, it shouldn’t matter that I’m a couple days late with this. Yes, the Canon 5d Mark II, a wonderful camera previously limited to shooting 30p video with automatic, terrible-sounding audio, is now many, many times more valuable thanks to a free firmware update live on Canon’s site. Kind of a big deal:

  1. Adds 24p and 25p.

UPDATE FROM CANON: Recently we have discovered a malfunction that occurs with Firmware Version 2.0.3, in which the manual recording levels for C1/C2/C3 are changed and the camera becomes unable to record audio if the power is turned off (or if Auto power off takes effect) after registering “Sound Recording: Manual” in the camera user settings.

We apologize very sincerely for the inconvenience, but we are going to stop making this firmware available for download. For customers who have already updated to the new firmware, when using the camera with the mode dial set to C1/C2/C3, please either set the sound recording settings to Auto.

We are currently preparing firmware that will correct this malfunction. As soon as those preparations have been completed, we will let you know on this Web site. In the meantime, we apologize for the inconvenience this represents, but please wait until the fixed firmware is ready.

Thanks noschool.com.

Wouldn’t you think canon would have a 5D Mll hanging around the tech support department to test firmware on before they release it? duh

Long awaited 5D firmware update

March 16, 2010

well here it is at least a link to the canon web site with a download button and instructions for loading it into your camera. it first time i tried to do a firmware update on my 20D i just couldn’t get it. sometimes when i read something i just don’t understand what i read, but following these instructions step by step is pretty easy.

this page also tells you what the features are in the software for recording video and sound. looks like they have listened to some of the comments on the cinema 5d web site.

if i can do it so should other people.

letter reply from Canon CEO & President Mr. Adachi, 5D MK II

February 23, 2010

Your recent letter to Mr. Adachi has been forwarded to my attention for reply. I sincerely appreciate your concerns and would like to apologize for any misunderstanding you may have encountered during your visit at the 2009 Photo Expo.

The EOS 5D MK II is the first and foremost a still image camera, and offers the ability to make high quality video clips. Unfortunately, HDMI output at 1920 X 1080 is not possible as the camera is not capable of handling the massive amounts of data written to the card, and output an HD signal via the HDMI port at the same time. This is why Live View is limited to 640 X 480 resolution.

The firmware update you are referred to in your letter, is intended to be released sometime during the first half of 2010. There was no release scheduled for January. When the update is released, we will see what frame rates the firmware offers.

As for the other features you mentioned as being absent from the EOS 5D MK II, they may be considered for a future product.

I hope this information is helpful to you and once again appreciate your interest in Canon.

update on Canon 580ex flash units

February 8, 2010

well the deeper i delve into this situation with our flash units and trying to learn something new. brian at B&H video was right when he said ‘learning studio flashes are easier than learning canon flash units.’

the canon flash units are Infrared ‘IR’ units which need to have a line of sight in order to work. that’s why they didn’t talk to each other shooting through my softboxes. so in order for me to get them off camera and use ETTL i need to use the 2′ extension that canon sells as OC-E3 $70.00 which i have. but it does limit my off camera axis, then there is line of sight limitations.

so i called a friend of mine who now owns a 5D Mll and pocket wizards and asked how he’s been shooting these days. well it seems his problems are between his pocket wizards and the 580exll causing radio interference and the work around from pocket wizards is to add an interference sock to the 580exll.

now it seems to me that ‘pocket wizards ll, $170″ are the state of art for wireless radio control. that is until other people got involved such as ‘radio popper, $249‘ an and a chinese company selling on ebay  the CTR-301 P $25, and maybe a few others i don’t know about. doing a google search today wasted most of the day reading but hey learning something new isn’t too much of a waste. also i hear the paul buff’s ‘commander series $250′, and ‘cybersync, $90’ works on the canon series but haven’t talked to them yet.

some of the radio slave problems seem to be how to attach them to the various flash units but i understand some of the companies are working on that. but it’s always a good idea to have some gaffer tape along, ya never know when it’ll come in handy.

the 580ex flash units won’t work with these slaves unless they have a hot shoe connection adapter because no sync cord connection as the 580ex ll does. this is a dark jungle this world of flash. keep your eyes and ears open before you move, this next step could cost you.

but back to the meat of the 580ex flashes. don’t expect them to work in the direct sun light as the bright sun overpowers the infrared sensors and makes the ST-E2 transmitter canon sells for $220 useless as are the sensors on the flashes. when you’re developing products in the dark, these things happen.

now i am just learning how to use these flash things but you’d think that canon photographic engineers might know something about how the cameras are used and by whom. who are these ‘photographers of light’ and what planet do they live on? can they speak outside of photo expo stages?

i know there was a problem with the 5D Mll over the 5D using second curtain external flash as the 5D Mll improved
the system so this function is disabled using non canon flash units. canon service reps told me they couldn’t design a camera system for other flash units. i guess petty cash funds are limited at lake success and there are no camera stores on the long island.

but there is a workaround for second curtain sync. as with all problems someone comes up with a solution too bad it’s not the manufactures. need and answer? google it. there are discussions on photonet and a few cool videos on vimeo and other groups.

yes i know to find the right answer you could spend all day learning things you never knew, or how to ask the questions  you never knew  existed  and waste a whole day doing it.

oh if you’re interested in learning more about the 5D Mll software issues and solutions you might want to view magic lantern.

just sharing another wasted day with you, oh it’s dark outside so it must be night. where’d it go?

canon flash units

February 3, 2010

it’s come to my attention my canon 580ex flash unit doesn’t have an external sync connection. it seems canon hasn’t put one in there flashes until the 580exll at $445.00 at B&H video.i was told tonight by a counter person at B&H that the 580exll was an improved flash unit.

what is this company thinking? all photographers put external flash units on their cameras?

can you imagine an external flash unit without a sync connection direct to camera? well canon can and does. they do offer a 2′ hot shoe connector for those use a bracket a ‘shoe cord’ they call it.

oh right, the flash units are wireless with no backup mode other than buying another flash head and transmitter. don’t ya just love all this technology? but the wireless transmitter is a feature of the camera right? oh i have to buy the transmitter separately just to make this work? maybe what i should have bought is canon stock instead.

what with all this brouhaha over the 5d mll and the poor software or lack of real video capabilities and no quick update from a company caught off guard with their own development i wonder if living in lake success doesn’t have it’s downside?

i am trying to move to exterior flash units, which are much smaller than my studio strobes and lighter to drag around the country side i am surprised by how limited canon as a photographic company is.

do they really want all my money?

live and learn. if only i went with nikon years ago this might or might not be an issue these days.

we also have a shoe saying around in my circle  ‘dumber than a shoe’  but i am not sure the canon executives run around the same circles i run in.

oh well

Letter to Canon about my 5D Mll software, feel free to use

January 22, 2010

Canon U.S.A., Inc.
One Canon Plaza
Mr. Yoroku Adachi
President & CEO, Canon U.S.A., Inc.
Lake Success, NY  11042
Ref: Canon 5D Mll software

Dear Mr. Adachi
I am writing to you concerning the perceived lack of support for your 5D M ll camera. At least that’s the way the general photographic community and users I belong to feels about this camera.

When is your R&R department going to issue an update on the firmware or software to bring this camera in line with the rest of your digital cameras video capabilities. I was told at 2009 Photo Expo that this software should be ready this month, January 2010, for download but so far I’ve received no such announcement.

To say I am quite disappointed that none of these missing features have been included for this camera is an understatement.

– Add / Improve: In Full HD (1920×1080) mode, allow these frame rates: 29.97, 25, 23.976 fps
FIX the current 30.00 fps to the standard NTSC 29.97 fps
Improve the video quality in 23.976 and 25 to minimize “jello” effect
– Improve AutoFocus algorithm in Live View mode (contrast detection mode)
– Add Focusing Aids in Video mode, maybe face reconnection?
– Add HD (1280×720) video mode with the above frame rates.
– Improve: Make HDMI output at FULL HD (1920×1080) and CLEAR of any overlay or information when recording and/or when just watching in Live View (if when recording is not possible)
– Add: a split video function to continue recording once the 4GB limit is reached in another video file without stopping the recording process.
-Allow Audio Manual Gain
-oh why limit recording time to 12 minutes?

This lack of support has me wondering why I’ve stayed with this company through my A1 & F1 cameras  right into the digital age, even after your company dumping the FD line of lenses. That was a sizable investment on my part while having to part with my favorite lenses.

So my question is when will your company wake up and take care of it’s customer base?

Sincerely
Mr. Jene Youtt
