Angkor Hospital for Children fundraising photo auction

November 21, 2011

here is a worthy cause one we became acquainted with while we were in Cambodia visiting Angkor Wat through the photographer Kenro Izu who actually started this project when he was shoot Angkor Wat. he said ‘it was the children’ who made him realize how lovely life can be.

Cambodia is a very poor country, i’ve seen it, yet the people have an enjoyment and smiles on their faces especially the children. who knows what makes this so as this mix of poverty and happiness is foreign to us americans. so mary and i donate prints of our work to help support this hospital. we’ve been doing this for a number of years and feel we are making a difference in the world.

please do support this auction.

The National Museum of Cambodia

October 5, 2010

A cultural awakening for when visiting the iconic National Museum of Cambodia today in Phnom Penh is cambodia’s largest museum of cultural history and is the country’s leading historical and archaeological museum. it houses one of the world’s largest collections of khmer art, including sculptural, ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic objects. the museum buildings, inspired by khmer temple architecture, were constructed between 1917 and 1924, the museum was officially inaugurated in 1920,and renovated in 1968.]

National-Museum-of-Cambodia-Phnom-Penh

Touring the national museum of cambodia I never expected to receive the unique learning experience of diversity of ancient cultures blended so well in a modern museum. the museum buildings were constructed between 1917 and 1924, with the inauguration of the museum in 1920. the central section of the east façade was renovated in 1968 under the supervision of cambodian architect, vann molyvann. the museum in phnom penh is cambodia’s largest museum of cultural history and is the country’s leading historical and archaeological museum. it houses one of the world’s largest collections of khmer art, including sculptural, ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic objects. the museum’s collection includes over 17,000 items, from prehistoric times to periods before, during, and after the khmer empire, which at its height stretched from thailand, across present-day cambodia, to southern vietnam. george groslier (1887-1945), historian, curator and author was the motivating force behind much of the revival of interest in traditional ccambodian arts and crafts, and it was he who designed this building that is today ‘traditional khmer’ architecture. it is perhaps better described as a building enlarged from cambodian temple prototypes seen on ancient bas-reliefs and reinterpreted through colonial eyes to meet the museum-size requirements. together with the adjacent royal university of fine arts the national museum of cambodia works to enhance knowledge of and preserve Cambodian cultural traditions and to provide a source of pride and identity to the cambodian people. the museum also serves a religious function; its collection of important Buddhist and Hindu sculpture addresses community religious needs as a place of worship. a permanent exhibition, Post-Angkorian Buddha, is supported by UNESCO and a number of individuals and local businesses. . .

Friends Without A Border upcoming auctions

September 23, 2009

we found this organization on our trip to cambodia thru another photographer’s gallery. one nite looking for a place to eat we wandered around town as we do so often in visiting cities and came across this photography gallery next door to the FCC in Siem Reap.

it was John MeDermott’s Gallery full of infrared photography which i love of Angkor Wat. we went in and i bought a small print, something we could carry. while paying for the item i told the salesperson that i was a photographer to which she replied that john liked meeting other photographers and did i have a web site. i gave her my card and off we when to dinner.

arriving back at our hotel, The River Garden, we were informed i had a call and they would call back. yes it was john, he invited us down to the gallery to meet and chat.

mary asked the question about a cambodian charity because as americans we have so much that others don’t have. that brought up Kenro Izu work and about the children’s hospital. so this is how we learned of this group.

here are two events that i am donating prints to.

FWAB charity event monday 4/20/09

April 24, 2009
we've all been there

we've all been there

my girlfriend, mary wehrhahn and i participated in a fund raiser last night for Friends Without A Border – benefitting the Angkor Hospital for Children, their 7th annual Fundraiser, held at the NY Athletic Club.

this group was begun 10 years ago by noted photographer Kenro Izu’s to establish a children’s hospital in siem reap cambodia. kenro donates some of his prints to help raise money. He also has a much larger photography auction once a year to raise funds to support the operating expenses of the hospital, nurses, doctors, supplies and expansion.

we donated two prints which were enthusiastic received and bid on. my print when to a collector who owns some very impressive photographers,i was impressed with their names. mary’s went to just as impressive collector and got another sale of the same print to another curator. all together we raised $1000.00 for the hospital so far.

we met and talked with Kenro Izu after the auction to thank him for the opportunity to help the children of cambodia who’ve touched our heart on our last visit to their country.

it’s very nice to have ones work appreciated and bought for such a worthy cause. maybe our effort might save a child’s life. what a joy.
