japanese woodblock exhibit at nippon gallery

March 3, 2010

new york has so many surprises, today i found a japanese woodcut exhibit and artist Mr. Makino Munenori who’s exhibit  ‘Beyond Hokusai and Hiroshige’ complete woodblock prints, will only be in town from 3/3/10 to 3/9/10 at The Nippon Gallery located in The Nippon Club, 145 West 57th Street, NYC , NY, ground floor lobby.

originally i had gone to the building for a meeting at another office but after a quick glance in passing i knew i wanted to explore this exhibit more fully.  after my meeting  i entered the gallery space where they were making final adjustments to a video of the artist working in his studio.

i watched the video with fasciation and at the conclusion  i opened my wallet to remove a business card to give to the gallery sitter but as i turned around the artist and owner of the gallery stood there. what a lovely opportunity, totally unexpected, to engage in conversation had i only been able to speak japanese or he english. but the  translator who spoke better japanese than i but who’s english was something she was learning.

i gave Mr. Munenori my card, very important in japanese society and bowed we smiled a lot. i am sure that all the words i had to say weren’t translated but who cares. what did get communicated were my feelings about his work. what more is there?

so if you’re wandering around the neighborhood, west 57th street, do stop in for a new york treat via japan.

now for the third contest  i submitted  the females from above to The Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints Ltd.

boy that was some work day which i don’t usually put myself through because i try to submit long before the deadlines, but somehow things got away from me this year. hope this isn’t a harbinger of the year to come.

i’d be happy with any of these associations because looking at past winners  i’d be in some pretty good company. tomorrow i have to pack up my Ascending print and send it off to C4fap.

woohoo the day is done .

Artist wanted: Submissions Open for FIGMENT Events in NYC and Boston

February 23, 2010

Artists Wanted:
Submissions Open for FIGMENT Events in NYC and Boston

In June 2007, a group of New Yorkers came together for a new kind of arts event on Governors Island in New York Harbor—FIGMENT, a free event in which everyone is invited to participate and collaborate to create artwork and build community. By 2009, FIGMENT had grown to a 3-day event, in which over 13,000 participants came to interact and engage with over 400 participatoryarts projects. FIGMENT also presented several summer-long projects, including an 18-hole mini golf course designed by artists and a 16-piece large-scale interactive sculpture garden, which were enjoyed by an estimated 40,000 people from June through October.  As FIGMENT grows beyond the New York City area to launch FIGMENT Boston, and further expands its NYC presence, artists are invited to participate.

Submissions are now open for 2010 FIGMENT events in New York City (June 11-13) and Boston (June 5).  Art projects in every imaginable medium are welcome, including sculpture, installation, performance, music, workshops, activities, games, visual art, and electronic art.  In addition, FIGMENT is also accepting proposals until March 1 for its summer-long exhibitions on New York’s Governors Island: the FIGMENT Sculpture Garden and Mini Golf Course. Below is a summary of our current calls for participation:

New York City Event: June 11 – 13, Governors Island
Art Submission Deadline May 1

Boston Event: June 5, Memorial Drive, Cambridge
(co-located with Cambridge River Festival)
Art Submission Deadline May 1

New York City Sculpture Garden: June 11 through mid-October, Governors Island
Art Submission Deadline March 1

New York City Mini Golf Course: June 11 through mid-October, Governors Island
Art Submission Deadline March 1

For more information, please visit http://figmentproject.org.

FIGMENT celebrates an abundance of creativity and passion, challenging artists and our communities to find new ways to create, share, think, and dream. Become a part of events in NYC (June 11-13) andBoston (June 5), and interactive exhibits on NYC’s Governors Island from June through October. For more information, visit http://figmentproject.org.

FIGMENT is a project of Action Arts League, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, and is created and produced by a coalition of volunteers. FIGMENT is entirely funded by grants and individual donations, and accepts no corporate sponsorship of any kind. FIGMENT is made possible by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s SwingSpace program, which was created with lead support from the September 11th Fund. FIGMENT is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.

FIGMENT Boston is produced in collaboration with the Cambridge Arts Council (www.cambridgeartscouncil.org), which exists to ensure that the arts remain vital for people living, working and visiting Cambridge.

This is my first time working with this group as our other section was posted earlier on fuzzypictures .  I had no say in the lighting of these pictures as the space has a stage manager / lighting designer who did the lighting. I felt lucky to get what I did out of this session.

Letter to canon camera CEO about 5D Mll

February 15, 2010

i wish the community would join me in a letter writing campaign to the president & ceo of canon directly asking for the long awaited updated software for the 5D Mll.

i find it somewhat of a disgrace and affront to me the user that canon has taken so long to upgrade this camera’s software while introducing more new cheaper eos cameras  with better software.

calling  an anonymous  telephone line and speaking to representative isn’t as effective as a direct letter to the president. one needs to consider the cultural   implications of shame to the company for not doing anything to fix this oversight.

i don’t think improvements move up the ladder of command but rather down the chain of corporate communities.

if we want this software changed then we need to speak up often and many times in order to be heard over the din of doing nothing. squeaky wheels get greased, let us fill their ears with noise.

see below the presidents message to the world who canon is. do you think this is the same lethargic company  sitting on an updated software version for our cameras?

then do something. please take a moment out of your day to write to them stating your displeasure.

They are ‘artists books’ even though they don’t conform in all respects to some ten-point checklist of what makes a traditional book.” Richard Miller

To paraphrase an essay by Johnanna Drucker, an artist’s book is a work of art conceived and executed as a book and does not exist in any other form or format. It might use images, texts and any and all means of production – photography, painting, drawing, collage, metalwork, stitching, beading, both handwork and machine driven.
